Landschaftspark Binntal

The nature park in the Binntal valley is known for its wild, yet enchanting, setting – as well as for its local produce. You can use the online shop to purchase a variety of local specialities, such as teas of herbal from the park or delicatessen products from chef Klaus Leuenberger.

Mountain lakes in Binntal

One of the most beautiful with crystal-clear waters, and easily accessible, is the Halsesee, set amid moorland of national importance. The Schaplersee is in the middle of lush alpine meadows. Up at 2400m is the Geisspfadsee, a series of glacial lakes in a bleak scree landscape. Or you can visit the Grengjer See, the jewel of them all on a terrace in the Saflisch valley.

Nature park Binntal

The Binntal (Binn valley) surprises at every turn. A world classic and award-winning gastronomy in a mountain village. World-ranking architecture in a primordial landscape. It was the smugglers who came here first. Then came the rock crystal prospectors. For the Binntal had already garnered earlier renown for its mineral wealth. And it was the tourists who arrived finally. The traditional Hotel Ofenhorn dating from the pioneering age of Alpine tourism bears testament to this. Today, this Valais side valley is primarily renowned for its culture (in the music village of Ernen), the tulips (in Grengiols) and its surprising cuisine. And naturally also for its scenery. The Binntal Landscape Reserve offers primal naturalness from the mountain peaks down to the periphery of the villages – which coincidentally are so authentic that they have earned a prize for this very attribute.

Twingi Gorge

In the past, the route through the Twingi Gorge was extremely dangerous in winter. Until the tunnel was built between Ausserbinn and Binn (1965), the remote valley was often cut off from the outside world for weeks at a time in winter. Now the old footpath provides a spectacular scenic route for cyclists and walkers. With its tunnels and ancient walls supporting the sides and marking the edge, it is an impressive monument to earlier times.
