Description

The snowshoe trail leads over the Simplon Pass to the "Weng" hill. While walking you can enjoy the 360 ° view of the surrounding mountains. If the Fletschhorn dominates at the beginning, after around 30 minutes the hikers have a view to the north of the Aletsch area and the Bernese Alps. The trail is accessible early in winter thanks to its sunny location. The hike is especially beautiful with fresh snow. Thanks to its high location and flat plains, the Simplon Pass is a wonderful hiking area. Especially in winter, the pass landscape shows an undiscovered, romantic side. In the Simplon hospice or in the restaurants, winter sports enthusiasts can take care of themselves or warm up after the hike.

You can easily reach the Simplon pass by postbus from Brig or Domodossola. Free parking spaces are also available on the pass.

Turn-by-turn directions

The snowshoe hike begins at the Monte Leone restaurant, where the «Simplon, Monte Leone» postbus stop is also located. The trail entrance is on the right side of the building behind the garages. The pink colored pillars are clearly visible from the street.

The route traverses the plains on the Simplon Pass to the north. Following the marking pillars, winter athletes climb to an altitude of around 2,100 m above sea level. M. high. You cross a varied landscape. At the beginning of the hike you can see the area southwest of the Simplon Pass. Gampisch, Spittelmatte, Altes Spittel and Barralhaus can be seen in the foreground. In the background the peaks of Fletschhorn, Böshorn / Rauthorn, Galehorn, ...

In some places caution is advised, especially with fresh snow. Slides can come loose on the slope.

After the climb to 2,100 meters, the hikers overlook the Simplon Pass. The Simplon hospice at the foot of the Hübschhorn is very impressive. The mountain peaks are now also beautiful in an easterly direction. Bortelhorn, Wasenhorn, Monte Leone and Breithorn to the Hübschhorn.

The route leads down to the “Hopsche” alpine board and further east past the “Hopschusee”. You will soon see the proud 9-meter-high Simplon Adler, which the route also leads past. The last descent from Simplon Adler goes down to the entry level.

It is also possible to start the route from the Simplon hospice parking lot. In this case, go over the underpass of the national road to the entry level at the Hotel Monte Leone.
