Hérémence Church

The Church of St. Nicholas in Hérémence is a work of art cast in concrete. The same concrete was used 1,000m higher in the valley to build the dam wall of the Grande Dixence. The idea of the Basel architect and sculptor Walter Förderer was to imagine a rock had rolled down the mountain and to use this to build a church. This monument, built in 1971, exudes great power and reflects the surrounding mountain landscape as well as the character of the local people. Powerful, rough, impressive.
