Description

Paths for all the senses

The wind whistles around your ears, occasionally a stone crunches under your shoe. But otherwise you hear... nothing! The pioneers who built the Balfrin Höhenweg over several summers in the 1950s didn't call the connection between Saas-Fee and Grächen the "path to silence" for nothing. Even today, there are no pubs or mountain hotels to disturb the peace on this hike. After this challenging start, the equally panoramic Europaweg trail follows, accompanied by the majestic Weisshorn over the next few days. Finally, the Matterhorn comes into view as high up in the sky an eagle circles. The mountain world through which the Swiss Tour Monte Rosa leads is a feast for all the senses.

Itinerary

Day 1: Individual arrival in Saas-Fee

Nestled by snow-white peaks, the glacier village of Saas-Fee lies at the heart of the Saas Valley. Let the power of the surrounding 4,000 m peaks take effect on you and recharge your batteries for the days ahead.

Day 2: Saas-Fee - Grächen

Challenging high-altitude trail between Saas-Fee and Grächen, partly very exposed through the steep walls of the Balfring Group. The views down into the Saas Valley are dizzying, the views of the Fletschhorn, Lagginhorn and Weissmies are thrilling.

Details: approx. 20 km, 1,250 m ascent, 1,450 m descent, duration: approx. 7 h.

Day 3: Grächen - Europa mountain hut (Europahütte)

First section of the Europaweg. A steep ascent to the ridge at the beginning, then panoramic through the steep flanks of the Mischabel group on a spectacular high trail to the Europahütte. A sensational panorama dominated by the Weisshorn.

Details: approx. 16 km, 1,400 m ascent, 760 m descent, duration: approx. 6.5 h.

Day 4: Europa mountain hut - Zermatt

Second section of the Europaweg. A challenging path, in places carved into the rock, through tunnels, galleries and over bridges. Grandiose panoramic tour overlooking the 4,000m peaks of the Valais, grand finale at the Leisee above Zermatt.

Details: approx. 20 km, 950 m ascent, 1,600 m descent, duration: approx. 6.5 h.

Day 5: Departure or extension
