Some of the best wines in Switzerland mature on the sunny side of the Rhône Valley. Your cycling trip on the Valais Wine Trail takes you through this romantic scenery. Vineyards line the path on your way towards the eastern part of the valley, past the churches and castles of Sion to the market place in Leuk. On the way, you’ll enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Valais mountains and a variety of culinary delicacies.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Martigny | Martigny – Sion

You’ll leave your luggage in Martigny. An energetic up and down on a steep sun-kissed southern slope, through well-tended vineyards, small wine villages and historic spots such as Saillon with the mini-vineyard of the well-known forger Farinet, and Chamoson, with the octagonal tower of St-Pierre-de-Clages. After your arrival in Sion, a tasting of wines from Valais awaits you.

Day 2: Sion – Leuk

French-style joie de vivre in Sion, the quaint main town in Valais, back-breaking work in the hot, steep vineyard slopes, perspiring round bends on tiny, boiling-hot mountain roads. To understand the wine culture in Valais better, you’ll visit the wine museums in Siders and Salgesch. Together with the fabulous views on offer today, this is a feast for all your senses.

Day 3: Departure or individual extension

Key elements

A comfortable start on the first day, after which the trip becomes more difficult. The ride through the vineyards on the sunny slopes of the Rhône Valley on the second day is challenging. The tour takes place on quiet side roads in the middle of the unique alpine scenery that is typical of Valais.

Voucher for arrival by train

Leave the car at home! Every participant in a walking or cycling tour in Switzerland will receive a promotion code from the SBB which will allow him or her to deduct CHF 10 from the price of the ticket for arriving by train. The discount is available in the online shop, at the ticket office or via the SBB app. For many journeys, we use the luggage counters at the stations at the beginning and end of the journey to collect your luggage. You can easily combine these services when arriving by train. If you do not need the code for the journey itself, you will be able to use it in the course of 2022. Unfortunately, retroactive refunds are not possible for administrative reasons

The wine trail leads through the Valais vineyards from Martigny to Sion. The 39-kilometre bike trail winds gently up and down through this area, passing through carefully cultivated vineyards, historic locations and small wine-producing villages that offer wine tasting. Wines can be tasted without appointment at many points along the route. This unique bike trail is the perfect way to discover the Valais region and its vineyards.

Public transport

Arrive in Martigny by train from all Swiss towns and cities (SBB) or by the regional trains Railway Mont-Blanc & St-Bernard Express.

Approach

From the A9 motorway from Lausanne or Sierre, take the Martigny-Fully exit (number 21), or the cantonal road. Routes that are open all year round: the Forclaz pass, the Great Saint Bernard tunnel, the Simplon pass. Passes that are open only during summer: Great St Bernard, Nufenen, Grimsel, Furka

Follow the car-park routeing in Martigny.

Equipment

We recommend: bike in excellent working order, helmet, gloves and bell, clothing suitable for the weather (always carry a waterproof), food and drink.
