Furka Pass – Legendary Mountain Passes

From the village of Oberwald at the very top of the Goms Valley to the summit of the Furka Pass, this road is one of the highest passes in Switzerland, connecting the canton of Valley with the canton of Uri.

The Furka Pass is probably one of the prettiest passes in Switzerland. At an altitude of 2,431m, it is the fourth highest after the Umbrail, the Grand-St-Bernard and Nufenen passes. From Oberwald in the magnificent Goms Valley until the summit which straddles the cantons of Valais and Uri, the route passes through Gletsch and then rises, coming flirtatiously close with the Rhone Glacier. The great river is derived from these remote snow melts before crossing the entire canton until Lake Geneva and – then – on to the Mediterranean! It is definitely worth a stop at the restaurant that overlooks this incredible place.

The most beautiful routes of the Swiss Alps

Impressive stone dams, breathtaking rides through passes and idyllic Valais villages – surrounded by the most beautiful and highest mountain peaks in the Swiss Alps, cycling dreams come true in Valais. Starting from Brig, the tour goes into the Goms, high up to sparkling dam lakes and alpine worlds of rock and ice. The ride over the Alpine passes is one of the most beautiful road cycling tours in Switzerland. One highlight follows another in Valais.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Brig | Brig – Grimselpass – Oberwald

Follow the course of the Rhone to reach the Goms valley. The Walser villages in Goms are waiting to be discovered as if strung on a string of pearls. You arrive in Oberwald, but the tour is not over yet. The Grimsel Pass is only a stone's throw away for sport cyclists.

approx. 85 km / 2'250 m ascent / 1'560 m descent

Day 2: Round tour of Alpine passes

The most beautiful Alpine passes can be reached quickly from Oberwald. You climb high into the rocky world of the Nufenen pass and whoosh down to Airolo. The following ride up to Gotthard Pass is over cobblestones along the countless serpentine curves and challenges you. You can relax while descending to Hospental. And then it's time for a challenge again, because the Furka Pass at the end of the journey is really tough.

approx. 100 km / 3'025 m ascent / 3'025 m descent

Day 3: Oberwald – Binntal – Leuk

You follow the Rhone route again at the beginning, and it leads you past the most beautiful villages of the Goms. However, the tour is not quite that easy, as a detour into the Binn Valley is on the agenda. The picturesque return journey to Leuk is the successful conclusion of your journey through Upper Valais.

approx. 95 km / 760 m ascent / 1'390 m descent

Day 4: Departure or individual extension

Tour characteristic

A unique scenery awaits you in Valais. Surrounded by the highest peaks of the Alps, you will visit some of the most famous valleys and passes of Switzerland. Some traffic must be taken into account near town and city centres. The ride over the Alpine passes on the second day poses a significant challenge in terms of fitness.

Turn-by-turn directions

The cyclist who tackles the Furka Pass will discover the very edge of the canton of Valais and the source of the Rhone River; the most important river in the canton. The first few kilometres from Oberwald to Gletsch pass through forests and waterfalls on this road that eventually leads to Andermatt and the canton of Uri. After passing through Gletsch, the road climbs with a long straight hugging the side of the mountain before beginning to meander into curves. On the left, the Rhone Glacier is spectacular, and will leave you daydreaming despite the effort. The last kilometres to the summit become less steep, giving you a break to ponder over the views of the  Uri Alps and the Saint-Gotthard Massif.
