Tière via ferrata

The Via Ferrata of Tière is 450 m long and passes a height difference of 125 m. It crosses over the Tière cascades three times.

The departure point is at the ""Sous-Scex"" bridge at about 900 m above sea level. The Via Ferrata leads you up to 1226 m above sea level. The trail is well signposted from Champéry and Val d'Illiez. You pass through the impressive Défago gallery on the way back.

Turn-by-turn directions

The brown signals lead you to the beginning of the Via Ferrata which you can reach in a 25-30 minutes walk. The first secured part brings you to the Tière waterfall. Vertical sections alternate with horizontal traverses. After the end of the Via Ferrata take a path up through the forest and follow the way back on the Défago Gallery, whose name was given in honor to Emmanuel Défago, a local businessman who opened this gallery in 1864.

At the end of the Défago Gallery you arrive at Chalet Rosalie, where you can fish trouts.

Public transport

Arriving from Brig or Geneva, take the trains of the Simplon line to Aigle and then take the AOMC regional train to Champéry. 

 

Approach

From the A9 motorway, take the St-Triphon exit in the direction of the Portes du Soleil via Collombey, Troistorrents, Val d'Illiez and finally Champéry.

Parking

Parking is possible directly at the cable car in Champéry. 

Equipment

All climbers must wear a harness. Because of the risk of falling rocks along the route, a helmet is also essential. Ensure you have sturdy footwear and appropriate clothing, and bring a small rucksack with water and a snack. A suitable pair of gloves will protect your fingers and knuckles from grazes.

Safety information

Weather conditions: before setting off to tackle a via ferrata, it is important to check the weather forecast. Bad conditions can make climbing dangerous – particularly in stormy weather.

Rockfalls: because of the risk of falling rocks – usually caused by climbers higher up or by animals – all climbers are strongly advised to wear a helmet.

Safety: always leave sufficient distance between yourself and the climber ahead. There should never be more than one person between two anchor points.
