Pure enjoyment on single trails in the Valais

Snow-white mountain peaks, sunny valleys and the idyllic Alps: there are countless reasons to visit Valais, but the one that attracts bikers to the south of the Alps the most is the innumerable singletrails. Starting from the thermal resort of Leukerbad, the Valais Bike takes you on promising paths down the flanks of the Rhône Valley to Gampel-Steg. From there you continue to Raron and take the cable car up to Unterbäch. Take a deep breath and brace yourself because you will climb up to the promising Moosalp the next day before following a cracking trail down to the Matter Valley. The picturesque Gibidum lake will tempt you to linger awhile, but the bike tour comes to an end shortly thereafter at the Stockalper Palace in Brig. Be it a valley or peak: this bike tour through Valais provides many good reasons for a second visit.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Leukerbad

Enjoy the view of the Valais mountains when bathing in the thermal bath at Alpentherme.

Day 2: Leukerbad – Unterbäch

In the morning, you will take the cable car up to Rinderhütte, where the Torrent Trail Bike, one of the most beautiful singletrails in Switzerland, awaits you. Make a turn at Erschmatt and descend into the Rhône Valley. From Raron, the cable car takes you up to the next stage destination, i.e., Unterbäch. If you want to enjoy theValais mountain sun a bit longer, you can add a few more laps to the Flowtrail Leukerbad at the top of the first gondola in Rinderhütte before heading towards Untere Feselalp on a balcony trail.

Day 3: Unterbäch – Grächen

A chairlift takes you up to Brandalp. From here you have to cycle uphill to reach Moosalp. Take a well-earned lunch break at the Moosalp restaurant. It’s now time to get back in the saddle and tackle the descent into the Mattertal valley and the route along the valley floor to Stalden. Then continue on the beautiful Matterhorn Valley Trail up through the Mattertal to St. Niklaus. From St. Niklaus, a bus will take you to Grächen, the destination of today's stage.

Day 4: Grächen – Brig | Departure

For this stage of the Valais Bike route, you set off from the village of Grächen along a 4x4 road towards Gasenried. The first highlight is a magnificent descent towards Mattsand on the Mattsand Enduro route. To reach Stalden further down the valley, take the Matterhorn Valley Trail, which follows the historic path lined with drystone walls that is included in Switzerland’s Federal Inventory of Historic Transport Routes. From Stalden, the cable car takes you to Gspon in just a few minutes. From the mountain station, the magnificent Gspon Panorama Bike route passes through the forest of Sädol before reaching – with a good deal of effort – the Gibidum Pass and its bucolic lake. At this point you enter the wilderness of the Nanztal Valley. A steep but smooth descent takes you to the Nidristi alpine pasture before a last easy, top-quality trail leads to Brig, the destination of this stage.
