Description

Following the old valley trail between Saas-Balen and Stalden, the tour passes through the various hamlets of Eisten and Stalden. Most of these authentic villages are not visible from the road, and mountain bikers thus get a different view of this rocky valley entrance. The view is of the Bietschorn and the Saas Valley with its mountains during the trail. In addition to numerous waterfalls, the route also passes historical landmarks such as the «Hüetegga», the birthplace of the king of mountaineering Alexander Burgener, or the almost 500-year-old “Chinegga” Bridge «, through which all mule and tourist traffic passed at the time.

In Stalden, further mountain bike adventures in the region can be discovered on routes no. 41 (Valais Alpine Bike) and no. 150 (Visp - Zermatt Bike)

Our favorites

Our favorite itineraries are part of a selection of the best routes in the region and are proposed by Valais/Wallis Promotion to best meet the expectations of our guests.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the village square in Saas-Balen, the trail follows the river via Niedergut to the water catchment and then crosses a small bridge. The bikers then reach the western side of the valley. After the shooting range, the route zigzags down the main road and crosses it. At the ARA (STEP) junction, it descends and continues to the left of the entrance, below the gallery, to the cable car departure station, before following the old paths to the «Ze Briggeltinu» hamlet. After this, the trail leads through meadows and forests to the Ahornbach creek and then onto an asphalt mountain road down to «Zen Eisten». Shortly before reaching the main road, it turns right and follows the path to Eisten. At the hairpin bend after Eisten, the route continues straight through the last few hamlets to the «Chinegga» bridge, then follows the small village street to the Stalden-Saas railway station.
