Valais is known for its many grape varieties that are admired and envied outside the canton.

But in recent years, the needs of hop lovers have also been amply met with many artisanal breweries developing and thriving alongside the big names in brewing. Blonde and white beers as well as amber ales and stouts are brewed with passion throughout the canton. Like the Valaisans themselves, they are brimming with character.

La Marmotte

On the shores of Lake Grenon, in the heart of Crans-Montana, “La Marmotte” brewery pays tribute to the resort’s famous mascot, “Bibi the Marmot”. A wide choice of rich and varied beers is available. You can also visit the brewery, by reservation only, to discover if marmots are also in charge of brewing the nine varieties of beer.

WhiteFrontier

With WhiteFrontier, a beer becomes an invitation on a journey, an exploration of nature or even an ode to adventure – as with their “Log Out and Live”. These sensations are reflected in their creations; surprising beers with intense tastes, winners of many awards and all very different. Head to the Taproom in Martigny to discover their assortment of beers in an ideal setting.

Malternative

Malternative is a 100% organic, eco-responsible Martigny-based brewery that produces, amongst other things, the first beer to feature the Valais brand. Brewed, fermented and bottled in Valais, Malternative beers are made with spring water and local cereals, hops and regional yeasts. Taste the incomparable flavours of these ultra-local craft beers – ranging from ginger, sweet, sour, and citrus through to chocolate and coffee.

7Peaks

The “7Peaks” artisanal brewery was born in Morgins at the foot of the Dents du Midi. The brewery has created seven beers named after each of the mountain range’s peaks. The beers have well-defined characters and unique tastes that will surprise your taste buds, and can also be enjoyed in the brewery’s bar at an altitude of more than 1,300 metres.

Heidnischbier

The name “Heidnischbier” refers to Heidnischbiel, a hilly region between Raron and St German. This is where the “Heidnischbier” was born, the result of a collaboration between friends from the region who wanted to create a beer corresponding to their wishes. Their Pale Ale was awarded first prize in the “Swiss Beer Award 2019/2020”; true recognition for the work achieved by this group of friends in the Swiss brewing industry.

BrigerBierBrauerei

Although slightly more difficult to pronounce after drinking a few of their delicious creations, BrigerBierBrauerei have been brewing their distinctive beers since 2017. Named after the three wise men, the Melchior, Balthasar and Kaspar beers are the gold, myrrh and frankincense of this brewery based in Naters.

Hoppy People

Since 2016, Hoppy People beers have been winning over hop lovers with their catchy names and unique taste. The brewery was keen to power its entire production process using clean energy drawn from its own solar panels. This was facilitated by the brewery’s location in Sierre, which is nicknamed the “City of the Sun”. It proved the perfect base for brewing a range of beers that are regularly supplemented by special editions.

L’Échappée Rouvinez

The first beer produced by a Valais wine-growing estate has the perfect name: “L’échappée” (the getaway). Authentic and traditional, this uncompromisingly pure beer gives the impression of being brewed by the Alps themselves. Tasting it is an opportunity to discover a beer that exudes a passion for the Valais region and has a strong character, honoured at the “Swiss Beer Award” in 2019.

La Sierrvoise

Whether it’s red ale, white or blonde beer, stout or génépi, “La Sierrvoise” has a beer for everyone. Since 1997, the brewery has been developing unique beers with a strong character. With six beers in their range, they refuse to rest on their laurels and are constantly improving their recipes and introducing new offerings.

Brasserie Valaisanne

This brewery is a fixture of the Valais brewing landscape. Its lager, pale ale and white beer with apricot aromas are brewed at the heart of Valais in Sion. The brewing water drawn from a spring in the Sionne valley and a meticulous selection of the best ingredients give these beers their unique character.

Traquenard

The “Traquenard” brewery is a family business located on the banks of the Rhône in Sion. Everything began with a first attempt at using an amateur brewing kit: inspired by his early successes and a burgeoning passion for beer, Dimitri, the founder of Traquenard, started his own brewery in 2016. Since 2019, a range of beers and a wide choice of artisanal drinks have also been available to try in “Le Traqbar”, located in Sion’s La Matze building.

Abbaye de St-Maurice

The first Swiss abbey brewery began operating in 2019 in St-Maurice. The abbey has existed since 515 and now produces monastic beverages that are sure to please malt fans. Visitors can reserve tours of St Maurice’s famous treasures as well as its ancient cellar, which dates back to 1244 and houses the brewery itself.

Zermatt Bier

“Zermatt Bier” is the product of a subtle blend of hops, yeast and malt and the expertise of its master brewer. This soft, balanced amber beer is distinguished by its sweet and fruity character. Brewed on the slopes of the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa, it’s as refreshing as a stroll along the Zmuttgletscher and perfect in any season.

Brasserie de Vollèges

This brewery in a small Val de Bagnes village was founded by eight friends who are passionate about beer. Learning as they went along, they put their heart and soul into creating a range of craft beers including a light blond, an IPA, and white and amber beers.

Brasserie du Vieux Chemin

The Brasserie du Vieux Chemin in Savièse was founded in autumn 2010 by two childhood friends. It offers a delicious range of hoppy beverages, including a pale ale, a wheat beer, an American amber, a session ale, and a stout with notes of coffee, as well as specialities such as a beer aged in red and white wine barrels, a kaffir lime white beer and a dubbel ale.

La Grenade

Since 2015, Brasserie La Grenade has brewed its beers by hand with water from Nendaz, drawn from a source at the heart of 4 Vallées. They have a beer for every occasion, including a white beer with notes of lemon that’s perfect as an apéritif, a blond beer with a little more heft, a full-bodied amber beer and a stout for when you need to unwind.
