The Valais celebrates Switzerland

August 1 is Swiss National Day, a federal holiday. The whole country celebrates the foundation of the Swiss Confederation in 1291 with festivities, official speeches and fireworks. In Valais, locals celebrate 1 August surrounded by nature. We have put together a selection of ideas that promise a thrilling and inspiring day out. Long weekend

This year, Swiss National Day falls on a Thursday: an excellent opportunity to spend a long weekend in Valais by taking the Friday off. Brunch at the farm on August 1st

Let yourself be tempted by a hearty Buffet to get the National Day off to a good start. More than twenty farming families offer you the opportunity to come and have a brunch directly at the farm on August 1st. Young and old alike can enjoy homemade delicacies and there is something for everyone: braid, bread, jam, cheese, deli meats, röstis with a fried egg, or apple pie from the oven.

Crans-Montana: Water/fireworks show

Live music, performances for visitors of all ages, a market and shows featuring water and fireworks will entertain the crowds at Crans-Montana on 1 August. The festivities will end in grand style by Lake Grenon at 10 pm, with one of the canton’s finest fireworks displays.

Saas-Grund: How people in the Saas valley used to live

Over in Saas-Grund, a procession with the theme “How people in the Saas valley used to live” will set off at 4 pm. More than 35 beautifully decorated floats will showcase the traditions and customs of the Saas valley.

Champéry: Folklore groups and torchlit procession

Local traditions will take pride of place as the resort’s main street, the Rue du Village, welcomes folklore groups and stages a market throughout the day. After nightfall, a torchlit procession will precede the fireworks display.

Nendaz: Tracouet fireworks at an altitude of 2,200 metres

In Nendaz and up at the alpine pasture of Tracouet, you can enjoy performances by brass bands and alphorn groups as well as displays of circus skills and juggling throughout the day. In the evening, watch the fireworks and enjoy a delicious meal in a fairy-tale setting, 2,200 metres above sea level.

Leukerbad: the Gemmi cliffs lit up by fireworks

In Leukerbad, Swiss National Day will be celebrated during the day with a variety of entertainment and performances by local music groups. In the evening, festivities will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display in the valley and a surprise on the Gemmi cliffs!

The day before

Zermatt: A unique street fair

A lot of villages start their festivities the day before Swiss National Day. In Zermatt, for example, a must-see street fair gets started on the afternoon of July 31st. At the street fair, you will get a chance to enjoy raclette and local wines as well as free performances by different local bands.

Le Bouveret: Swiss Vapeur Parc during the night

The Swiss Vapeur Parc au Bouveret opens its doors the day before the national holiday for a night train trip through the Chablais miniature. At the same time, not to be missed under any circumstances: the festivities by the lake, the concerts and the big fireworks display on Lake Geneva on 31 July at 10.30 pm.
