The Valais celebrates Switzerland
The first day of August officially marks Swiss National Day. A day where the whole of Switzerland celebrates the birth of the confederation in 1291, with special events, official speeches and fireworks. In Valais, 1 August will be celebrated in the heart of nature. From the Rhône Glacier to Lake Geneva, the towns and villages of Valais have dreamed up a whole host of events to mark the occasion.

Selection of events not to be missed
Brunch on the farm on 1 August
Spend Swiss National Day tasting delicious local produce from Valais with brunch on the farm. Over 20 farming families are giving you the chance to revel in their homemade specialities, including bread, cheese, cured meat, rösti with a fried egg, and even apple tart fresh from the oven.
Sion: Get peddling for the Cycling and Valais Wine Day
Every year, the now traditional Cyclosportive des Vins du Valais cycling event gives keen cyclists the chance to discover the Valais vineyards by bike in the company of professional cyclists and other well-known athletes, politicians and cultural figures from Valais. New for 2021: start and finish in Sion town.
Dents du Midi Region: A wide range of artistic and musical entertainment
This year, the Dents du Midi Region is inviting you to join in the Swiss National Day celebrations on 31 July and 1 August! Stilt walkers, acrobats, freestyle footballers, flag throwers, and brass bands are just some of the many artistic and musical performances that will bring a festival atmosphere to the streets of Morgins, Champéry and Troistorrents as well as the restaurant terraces of Champoussin and Les Crosets. At nightfall, the Dents du Midi will be illuminated before the traditional fireworks.
Chamoson: Tackle the Chamoson Challenge
This year, the largest wine-growing region in Valais once again invites you to take on the “Chamoson Challenge” – a celebration which will take place throughout the municipality on Saturday, 31 July and Sunday, 1 August. The programme includes concerts, entertainment, and prizes to be won if you succeed the various challenges devised by our 17 partner institutions. If you have a competitive spirit and love food, this is the event for you!
Zermatt: celebrate Swiss National Day at the foot of the Matterhorn
Celebrate Swiss National Day with a view of one of the country’s most iconic locations. The festivities will start at around midday on the shores of Lake Leisee with musical entertainment and a speech by Swiss slam poet Lara Stoll. Throughout the evening, the resort’s restaurants have created special menus for the occasion. The celebrations will culminate at 10pm to the sound of bells at the foot of the Matterhorn with one of the canton’s most beautiful firework displays.
Saas Valley: Villages in celebration
Exceptionally, the villages of Saas-Almagell, Saas-Fee and Saas-Grund will come together to add their personal touch to what will be a colourful Swiss National Day, with concerts, speeches, fireworks, and activities of all kinds to bring the party atmosphere to the whole valley. A visit to these charming villages is the perfect way to celebrate Swiss National Day!
Torgon: Natur’art Exhibition and other events
As part of the Swiss National Day celebrations, the municipality of Vionnaz invites you to the second edition of Natur’Art, an art exhibition in the heart of nature. Three renowned international artists will present their pieces specially designed for the occasion. The festivities will continue at the Couvert des Vieilles from 5.30pm with speeches, concerts, entertainment, and food until the early hours.
Le Bouveret: Themed evenings, brunch and folklore
On the shores of Lake Geneva, the Swiss National Day weekend celebration promises to be electric! The festivities will kick off on 31 July with themed evenings and/or special menus in our restaurants – there will be something for everyone. Sunday, 1 August will be just as delicious with a tasty brunch served at Quai Bussien. Finally, round off your weekend in style with a traditional Sunday at the market with performances from various folk groups and an alphorn ensemble.
Martigny: Swiss National Day celebrations at Place Centrale
The “Octodurien” city has organised a distinctly musical Swiss National Day with a concert by Les Symphonistes d’Octodure orchestra from 6pm, followed by a concert by the Harmonie Municipale brass band. After the concerts, there will be the official Swiss National Day speech, and from 10.15pm, five firework displays will take place in different areas of Charrat and Martigny, so that everyone can enjoy the show!
Grengiols: Swiss National Day brunch
To celebrate Swiss National Day, the charming village of Grengiols invites visitors of all ages to its traditional 1st August family brunch. A generous buffet – delicious products from the Binntal valley and surrounding region along with home-made specialities – and musical entertainment will be waiting for you in the village square from 10am until 2pm (booking necessary).
Crans-Montana: A weekend of entertainment
Throughout the Swiss National Day weekend, soak up the lively atmosphere on the streets of Crans-Montana. From market stalls to the terraces of local retailers, enjoy a stroll rich in flavour and full of tasty treats as you savour a range of musical and artistic entertainment.
Sierre: festivities on the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville
Organised from 11am onwards on the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, the National Day is an event entirely free of charge and dedicated to families, with an amusement park and patriotic workshops for kids. The morning, more official, is animated by a speech of the president of the city of Sierre and a concert of a regional brass band. For the occasion, cafes and restaurants will open their doors and terraces to the public.

Evolène: Celebrations in the Val d’Hérens
Enjoy the many activities organised across the Val d’Hérens throughout the Swiss National Day weekend. From 31 July, head to Place de l’Eglise in Evolène for the traditional speech, musical entertainment, and fireworks at the foot of the mountains! On Sunday, 1 August, various events will take place in La Sage, Arolla, and Les Haudères.
This year, celebrate Switzerland on 31 July in Vercorin! The programme includes a wide range of events, including the traditional official speech, light refreshments, and amazing fireworks between the village centre and Lavioz Sports Centre.
Ovronnaz: Entertainment at Place du Village
All evening long, enjoy a wide range of entertainment at Ovronnaz’s village square. From 5pm, experience the nocturnal craft market, musical entertainment, food stands, a creative lantern-making workshop for children, and the village parade. The official section of the evening begins at 7pm with a performance from Leytron’s brass band, followed by a concert with Side One that promises to take you back to the best of the ’80s. To end this year’s fantastic celebrations, don’t miss the grand firework display from 10.30pm!
