Zermatt-Zmutt (No. 121)

Im Blickfeld der Weiler Zmutt und die Spitze des Matterhorns

Zermatt

This hike leads into the winter wonderland of times past. From Zermatt, it goes up a leisurely hiking trail to Zmutt, where time seems to stand still.

Duration

Description

The hamlet of Zmutt is already over 500 years old. The densely packed dark wooden houses exude romance and tradition. The small white chapel can be seen from afar. The path leads through the hamlet and crosses the Zmuttbach stream, where deep below – depending on the cold – mighty icicle formations and ice walls can be seen.

  • Magnificent view of the north face of the Matterhorn
  • Path partly on the "Matterhorn Trail" with information boards about the Matterhorn

Information

Public transport

By train to the Matterhorn village: 3½ hours from Zurich Airport or 4 hours from Geneva Airport. Visp is the transfer point to the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway. From Visp, the railway line runs through the Nikolai Valley, past small, idyllic villages to Zermatt.

Zermatt is also the starting or ending point of the world-famous Glacier Express panoramic train ride (St. Moritz / Davos – Zermatt).

Approach

Zermatt is car-free. Access for private vehicles is only allowed up to Täsch (5 km before Zermatt). The road Täsch - Zermatt is closed to public traffic.

Further travel to Zermatt is either by private taxi service or by shuttle trains. The trains run every 20 minutes. After about 12 minutes, the ride ends at the train station square in Zermatt.

Parking

In Täsch, there are parking garages with covered and uncovered spaces available. For example, at the Matterhorn Terminal or with private providers.

Further travel: see directions.

Equipment

Our recommendation:

  • Good footwear
  • Possibly hiking poles
  • Warm winter clothing depending on the weather

Safety information

  • Plan every mountain tour carefully and adapt to your own condition as well as to the weather and season.
  • The weather can change quickly in the mountains. Therefore, take suitable clothing and enough provisions and water. Turn back in good time if the weather is uncertain.
  • Inform third parties about the tour and, if possible, never go alone.
  • Do not leave marked paths and do not enter glaciers without a mountain guide.
  • Walking on ski slopes is prohibited.
  • Be considerate of other hikers as well as plants and animals.

Note: Observe possible closures (in case of avalanche danger).
