Winter hikes

Zermatt-Sunnegga (via Winkelmatten) (No. 112)

Winterwanderweg Zermatt - Sunnegga mit Blick aufs Matterhorn (4'478 m)

Zermatt

This Zermatt winter hike offers everything that makes a winter dream: sun, forest romance, snowy mountains, culinary delight, and a breathtaking view.

Difficulty

Intermediate

Length

3.73 km

Duration

2:00 h

Description

With this beautiful view, hiking up the mountain is even more fun. After the Winkelmatten district, the path enters the protected forest, where it goes uphill in dappled shade. Despite the forest, bright light conditions prevail because larches do not carry needles in winter. Occasionally, there is a clear view of the Matterhorn. Once the tree line is crossed, the snowfields shine.

Arriving in Findeln, you face the delightful choice: in which restaurant to stop? Because Findeln is the gourmet mecca par excellence. After the refreshment, the path winds along the ski slope uphill to Sunnegga.

  • Wolli beginners’ park at Leisee (for little ski bunnies)
  • Leisee shuttle train as an alternative to winter hiking

Information

Public transport

By train to the Matterhorn village: 3½ hours from Zurich Airport or 4 hours from Geneva Airport. Visp is always the transfer point to the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway. From Visp, the railway line runs through the Nikolai Valley, past small idyllic villages to Zermatt.

Zermatt is also the starting or ending point of the world-famous Glacier Express panoramic train journey (St. Moritz / Davos – Zermatt).

Approach

Zermatt is car-free. Access for private traffic is only permitted up to Täsch (5 km before Zermatt). The road Täsch - Zermatt is closed to public traffic.

Further travel to Zermatt is either by a private taxi provider or by shuttle trains. The trains run every 20 minutes. After about 12 minutes, the journey ends at the station square in Zermatt.

Parking

In Täsch, covered and uncovered parking garages are available, e.g. at the Matterhorn Terminal or with private providers.

Further travel: see arrival directions.

Equipment

Our recommendation:

  • Good footwear
  • Possibly hiking poles
  • Warm winter clothing depending on the weather

Safety information

  • Plan every mountain tour carefully and adapt it to your own conditions as well as to the weather and the season.
  • The weather in the mountains can change rapidly. Therefore, take appropriate clothing, sufficient provisions, and water. Turn back in time if the weather is uncertain.
  • Inform others about the tour and, if possible, never go alone.
  • Do not leave marked paths and do not venture onto glaciers without a mountain guide.
  • Walking on ski slopes is prohibited.
  • Show consideration for other hikers as well as plants and animals.
