Description

After the last houses at the end of the village of Zermatt, a gently ascending winter hiking trail follows. Soon the Zmuttbach appears in the forest. Here, the large stones in the stream wear snow caps. In Zum See and Furi, you can stop for refreshment – various catering options are available.

Author's recommendation

A walk through the historic hamlet of Zum See is recommended. An important mule track passed through here, crossing the Theodul Glacier, and it is listed in the Inventory of Historic Swiss Roads (IVS).

Getting there
Information

Public transport

By train to the Matterhorn village: 3½ hours from Zurich Airport or 4 hours from Geneva Airport. Visp is the transfer point to the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway. From Visp, the railway line runs through the Nikolai Valley, past small, idyllic villages to Zermatt.

Zermatt is also the starting or end point of the world-famous Glacier Express panoramic train ride (St. Moritz / Davos – Zermatt).

Approach

Zermatt is car-free. Private traffic is only allowed up to Täsch (5 km before Zermatt). The road Täsch - Zermatt is closed to public traffic.

Further travel to Zermatt is by private taxi service or shuttle trains. The trains run every 20 minutes. After around 12 minutes, the journey ends at the station square in Zermatt.

Parking

In Täsch, there are parking garages with covered and uncovered spaces available, such as at the Matterhorn Terminal or with private providers.

  • Carefully plan every mountain tour and adapt it to your own conditions as well as the weather and season.
  • The weather can change quickly in the mountains. Therefore, take appropriate clothing and enough provisions and water. Turn back in time if the weather is uncertain.
  • Inform others about the tour and if possible, never go alone.
  • Do not leave marked trails and do not go on glaciers without a mountain guide.
  • Walking on ski slopes is prohibited.
  • Be considerate of other hikers as well as plants and animals.
