Zermatt circular route (No. 117)

Winterwunderland

Zermatt

A chapel, beautiful bridges, and a winter wonderland at its finest: that is what the Zermatt circular route offers.

Difficulty

Intermediate

Length

6.49 km

Duration

2:00 h

Description

From the station, you walk to the back part of the village and then up to the hamlet of Blatten, where a visit to the chapel is worthwhile. Between Blatten and Moos, you cross a wooden bridge before entering the winter wonderland at Moos.

A highlight of the circular route is crossing the Findelbach Bridge. The spectacular bridge is 93 meters long and spans 50 meters above the Findelbach.

The last section also goes through the forest. On the flat AHV Trail, you proceed to Zermatt and through the village back to the station.

  • Suitable for children aged 6 and over
  • Baroque chapel "Maria Rosenkranzkönigin" at Blatten
  • Findelbach Bridge – one of Zermatt’s most popular photo motifs

Getting there
Information

Public transport

By train to the Matterhorn village: 3½ hrs from Zurich Airport or 4 hrs from Geneva Airport. Visp is always the transfer point to the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway. From Visp, the railway line runs through the Nikolai valley, past small, idyllic villages to Zermatt.

Zermatt is also the start or end point of the world-famous Glacier Express panoramic train journey (St. Moritz / Davos – Zermatt).

Approach

Zermatt is car-free. Access for private traffic is only allowed up to Täsch (5 km before Zermatt). The road Täsch - Zermatt is closed to public traffic.

Further travel to Zermatt is either by private taxi service or shuttle trains. The trains run every 20 minutes. After about 12 minutes the ride ends at the train station square in Zermatt.

Parking

In Täsch there are parking garages with covered and uncovered spaces available, for example at the Matterhorn Terminal or with private providers.

Further travel: see arrival instructions.

Equipment

Our recommendations:

  • Good footwear
  • Possibly hiking poles
  • Warm winter clothing depending on the weather

  • Inform a third party about the tour and, if possible, never go alone.
  • Do not leave marked paths and do not enter glaciers without a mountain guide.
  • Walking on ski slopes is prohibited.
