Winter hikes

Riffelalp-Winkelmatten (No. 114)

Winterwandern von der Riffelalp bis ins Dorf

Zermatt

This hike is pure winter forest romance. It leads from the slopes of the Gornergrat down to the village of Zermatt.

Difficulty

Intermediate

Length

4.22 km

Duration

1:45 h

Description

The tree line at Riffelalp shows it clearly: This is where the winter forest begins. The gnarled Swiss stone pines are heavily laden with snow. The cold winter breeze rustles through the bare branches of the larches. The snow crunches underfoot. And so the path winds gently down to Zermatt.

Those who do this winter hike in the late afternoon may see a deer, which hardly differs in color from the larch trunks and stands completely still.

Zermatt is also the start or end point of the world-famous Glacier Express panoramic train journey (St. Moritz / Davos – Zermatt).

Approach

Zermatt is car-free. Access for private vehicles is only allowed up to Täsch (5 km before Zermatt). The road from Täsch to Zermatt is closed to public traffic.

Further travel to Zermatt is either by private taxi service or shuttle trains. The trains run every 20 minutes. After about 12 minutes, the journey ends at the train station square in Zermatt.

There are parking garages with covered and uncovered spaces in Täsch. For example, at the Matterhorn Terminal or with private providers.

Our recommendation:

  • Inform others about the hike and if possible, never go alone.
  • Do not leave marked paths and do not venture onto glaciers without a mountain guide.
  • Walking on ski slopes is prohibited.
  • Be considerate of other hikers as well as plants and animals.

Note: The winter hiking trail can be slippery. It may be advisable to attach crampons to your shoes (available in sporting goods stores).
