Description

The start of the Panorama Winter Hiking Trail Unterbäch-Eischoll is at Brandalp. By the Alpenrösli restaurant, two paths lead westward. The panorama path runs to the left, above the chairlift station (Brandalp-Breite Stäg). From there, you cannot go wrong and can fully concentrate on the beautiful winter hiking trail. After about 500 meters, you enter a light spruce-larch forest. After roughly ten minutes, the forest opens up. At Breite Stäg, the path makes a hairpin turn and you take on the last gentle ascent. Shortly before the Gorbatbach, the path forks again and you go right. A few more meters and you reach the highest point and at the same time half way through the hike. With a light step, you walk downhill through the forest to the Egga restaurant in the Strygge.

The 200 meters of ascent and descent are each spread over six kilometers and therefore represent no great challenge for hikers.

Turn-by-turn directions

The path is continuously groomed with a piste vehicle. Normal winter shoes are therefore sufficient. If you wish, you can also bring snowshoes. There are no narrow or dangerous sections along the entire path.

Information

Public transport

The village of Unterbäch is perfectly accessible by public transport. You can take the SBB train from Visp to Raron. From there, it is about a five-minute walk to the Raron-Unterbäch aerial cableway. Upon arrival in Unterbäch, walk about two minutes east until you reach the Unterbäch-Brandalp chairlift.

After completing the panorama path to Eischoll, return from Eischoll with the aerial cableway back to Raron.

Approach

You can easily reach Unterbäch by car. Either choose the route from Visp via Bürchen to Unterbäch or the route from Turtmann via Eischoll to Unterbäch.

Tip: The Visp-Bürchen-Unterbäch road is a bit curvier but wider. The Turtmann-Eischoll-Unterbäch road is less curvy but narrower.

Parking

In Unterbäch, you can park the car in the parking garage at the eastern village entrance or directly in the village, below the mountain station of the Raron-Unterbäch aerial cableway. If you want to drive by car to Raron and then take the aerial cableway to Unterbäch, you can park at the lot marked LRU.

Safety information

Use of the winter hiking paths and the information on this website is at your own risk. On-site conditions may cause changes to the route. Valais/Wallis Promotion assumes no responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of the information on this website.

  • Carry a map with you. Download the complete description of the hiking trail along with a large-scale map by clicking "Print" at the top right of the page.
  • Use only marked hiking trails and follow all signposts and instructions – for your own safety, to protect livestock, and to avoid disturbing wildlife.
  • Be considerate towards other trail users and the landscape. Take your rubbish and that of others with you.
  • Carry additional sun protection. UV rays at high altitudes can be especially strong in winter, even on cloudy days.
  • Plan your hike carefully: consider the fitness levels of all participants, weather forecasts, and seasonality.
  • Weather conditions in the mountains can change very quickly and without warning. Appropriate clothing and sufficient provisions (food and drink) are very important. In unstable weather, turn back early.
  • Do not go onto glaciers without a mountain guide.
  • Observe warning signs indicating dangers, especially avalanche risk.
  • Inform third parties about your route and if possible, never go alone.
