Information

Public transport

By train to Matterhorn village: 3½ hrs from Zurich Airport or 4 hrs from Geneva Airport. Visp is always the transfer station to the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway. From Visp, the railway runs through the Nikolai Valley, past small idyllic villages to Zermatt.

Zermatt is also the starting or ending point of the world-famous Glacier Express panoramic train ride (St. Moritz / Davos – Zermatt).

Approach

Zermatt is car-free. Private traffic is only allowed up to Täsch (5 km before Zermatt). The road Täsch - Zermatt is closed to public traffic.

Further travel to Zermatt is either by private taxi provider or by shuttle trains. The trains run every 20 minutes. After about 12 minutes, the trip ends at the station square in Zermatt.

Parking

In Täsch there are parking garages with covered and uncovered spaces available. For example in the Matterhorn Terminal or at private providers.

Further travel: see arrival.

Equipment

Our recommendation:

  • Good and waterproof footwear
  • Snowshoes
  • Hiking poles
  • Warm winter clothing depending on the weather

Safety information

  • Plan every mountain route carefully and adapt it to your own conditions as well as the weather and the season.
  • The weather can change rapidly in the mountains. Therefore, bring appropriate clothing and enough provisions and water. Turn back in time in case of uncertain weather.
  • Inform others about the route and if possible never go alone.
  • Do not leave marked paths.
  • Walking on ski slopes is prohibited.
  • Be considerate of other hikers as well as plants and animals.

The snowshoe trails are passable without a guide. Warning: They are not tracked, groomed, or controlled daily. They are also not secured against natural hazards like avalanches or rockfall. For guaranteed safe snowshoe fun, observe the weather forecasts and the current avalanche bulletin.
Using the trails is at your own risk!
