Die Aussicht auf die höchtsen Berge des Wallis

Staldenried–Gspon

The Waldegga Trail in Gspon is special in many ways. Pure sunshine, enchanting views, and complete relaxation in the snow-covered winter forest. Above all, it is still doable even when snowshoe hikes are no longer possible in many places.

Description

On the Waldegga Trail in Gspon above Staldenried, you follow in the footsteps of football legend Ottmar Hitzfeld, after whom the highest-altitude football arena at about 2000 meters above sea level is named. The trail is aimed at snowshoers who already have experience in the terrain and good fitness. Because it goes quite steeply uphill. Once past the Waldegga ski lift, you trek on the high-level hike through Swiss stone pine and larch forest towards Sädolti. On the way, the peaks of Bietschhorn, Aletschhorn, and Finsteraarhorn greet you in the distance. Then continue up to Seewjini, where the forest becomes a bit more open. Attentive snowshoers may even catch a glimpse of capercaillies. Later, you can watch the ski pros on the piste before going back down to the football arena and the aerial cableway station.

Turn-by-turn directions

The Waldegga Trail starts at the upper station of the Staldenried-Gspon aerial cableway, passes the Ottmar Hitzfeld Arena and the Waldegg ski lift, and leads into the forest. From there, it continues towards Waldegga, Sädolti, and Seewjini. A little further, below Scheidbodo at the Gspon ski lift, it goes downhill back to the football arena and along the road to the starting point.

Safety information

Use of the snowshoe routes and information on this website is at your own risk. Conditions on site may cause changes to the route. Valais/Wallis Promotion accepts no responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of the information on this website.

  • Carry a map with you. Download the full description of the hiking trail with a large-scale map by clicking on “Print” at the top right of the page.
  • Use only marked trails and observe all signs and instructions – for your own safety, to protect grazing animals, and out of respect for wildlife.
  • Behave considerately towards other trail users and the landscape. Take your waste and that of others with you.
  • Take additional sunscreen. UV rays at high altitudes can be very strong, especially in winter, even in overcast weather.
  • Plan your hike carefully. Consider the required fitness level of all participants as well as weather forecasts and seasonal dependencies.
  • Inform third parties about the route and if possible never hike alone.
  • Weather conditions in the mountains can change very quickly and without warning. Appropriate clothing and sufficient provisions and drinks are very important. In case of bad weather, it is better to turn back early.
  • Do not go onto glaciers without a mountain guide.
  • Observe warning signs indicating dangers, especially avalanche risk.
