Information

Public transport

By train to the Matterhorn village: 3½ hours from Zurich Airport or 4 hours from Geneva Airport. Visp is the transfer point to the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway. From Visp, the railway route goes through the Nikolaital, past small, idyllic villages to Zermatt.

Zermatt is also the starting or ending point of the world-famous Glacier Express panoramic train journey (St. Moritz / Davos – Zermatt).

Approach

Zermatt is car-free. Private vehicle access is only allowed up to Täsch (5 km before Zermatt). The Täsch - Zermatt road is closed to public traffic.

Further travel to Zermatt is either by a private taxi service or by shuttle trains. The trains run every 20 minutes. After about 12 minutes, the ride ends at the train station square in Zermatt.

Parking

There are parking garages in Täsch with covered and uncovered spaces. For example, at the Matterhorn Terminal or with private providers.

Further travel: see arrival information.

Equipment

Our recommendation:

  • Good and waterproof footwear
  • Snowshoes
  • Trekking poles
  • Warm winter clothing depending on the weather

Safety information

  • Plan every mountain hike carefully and adapt it to your own conditions as well as the weather and the season.
  • The weather can change rapidly in the mountains. Therefore, bring suitable clothing and enough provisions and water. Turn back in time if the weather is uncertain.
  • Inform others about your route and, if possible, never go alone.
  • Do not leave marked paths.
  • Walking on ski slopes is prohibited.
  • Be considerate of other hikers as well as plants and animals.

The snowshoe trails can be walked without a guide. Attention: They are not tracked, not groomed, and not checked daily. They are also not secured against natural hazards such as avalanches or rockfalls. For guaranteed safe snowshoe fun, observe the weather forecasts and the current avalanche bulletin.
Walking the trails is at your own risk!
