Description

Gspon is a popular small, car-free holiday resort with a hotel-restaurant, a shop, holiday apartments, and group accommodations. The region is a gem, not least because of the rustic Valais houses and storages, giving the place a special charm. Gspon lies in the driest region of Switzerland. Nowhere else in the Alpine region is the tree line higher. Speaking of height – in this small hamlet is the highest football field in Europe, the Ottmar Hitzfeld Arena. The Gspon Trail also passes by it. The easy snowshoe hike above 2000 meters circles the Alpe Gspon. The sun especially spoils this area in midwinter. For most of the route, you also constantly enjoy the magnificent view of the village and the surrounding peaks over 4000 meters. The Gspon Trail also invites families to snowshoe fun. It is ideal for children who already have some experience with terrain.

Turn-by-turn directions

The starting point of the Gspon Trail is the mountain station of the Staldenried-Gspon cable car at 1899 meters. From there, the well over four-kilometer-long trail leads up to the Ottmar Hitzfeld Arena, under the valley station of the Gspon ski lift via the hamlets Summerhüs and Ze Hiischinu towards the high-altitude trail. From Grifolegga, it goes on a pleasantly developed path protected in the forest to the Wierli. The final trail towards Scheidbodo, Waldegga, and back to the Ottmar Hitzfeld Arena promises a varied yet comfortable route in the snow.

Safety information

Use of the snowshoe routes and information on this website is at your own risk. Conditions on site may cause changes to the route. Valais/Wallis Promotion assumes no responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of the information on this website.

  • Carry a map with you. Download the complete description of the hiking trail with a large-scale map by clicking "Print" at the top right of the page.
  • Use only marked trails and observe all signs and instructions – for your own safety, to protect grazing animals, and out of respect for wildlife.
  • Be considerate towards other trail users and the landscape. Take your waste and that of others with you.
  • Bring additional sunscreen. UV rays can be very strong at high altitudes, especially in winter, even on cloudy days.
  • Plan your hike carefully. Consider the required fitness level of all participants as well as weather forecasts and seasonal dependencies.
  • Inform third parties about the route and, if possible, never go alone.
  • Weather conditions in the mountains can change very quickly and without warning. Appropriate clothing, sufficient provisions and drinks are very important. In unstable weather, it is better to turn back early.
  • Do not go on glaciers without a mountain guide.
  • Pay attention to warning signals indicating dangers, especially avalanche risk.
