Description

Directly from the Bettmeralp cable car mountain station, the marked trail gently ascends to Hotel Waldhaus. Passing Chalet Tosca, you hike along the forest edge, parallel to the Blausee chairlift up to Gopplerlücke. At the highest point of the snowshoe tour, you have a magnificent view of the snow-covered Valais Alps. Along the forest ridge, the snowshoe trail now gently descends. Via «Schweibuflüe» you reach the Golmenegg area. Here you cross the Aletsch promenade and follow the trail further downhill. Passing the St. Bernhard Chapel, you hike over Biel and Flesch through open terrain eastwards. After a short climb through an idyllic little forest, you reach the height of Restaurant Adler on the Aletsch promenade. You hike back to Bettmeralp along this promenade.

Safety information

Winter sports report

Use of the winter hiking trails and information on this website is at your own risk. Conditions on site may cause alterations of the route.

  • Carry a map with you. Download the complete description of the hiking trail including a large scale map by clicking „Print“ at the top right of the page.

  • Use only marked hiking trails and follow all signposts and instructions – for your own safety, to protect livestock, and to avoid disturbing wildlife.

  • Behave considerately towards other trail users and the landscape. Take your rubbish and that of others with you.

  • Bring additional sun protection. UV rays at high altitudes can be very strong, especially in winter, even in cloudy weather.

  • Plan your hike carefully: take into account the required fitness of all participants, weather forecasts, and seasonal factors.

  • Weather conditions can change very quickly and without warning in the mountains. Appropriate clothing and sufficient provisions (food and drink) are very important. In unsettled weather, it's better to turn back early.

  • Do not venture onto glaciers without a mountain guide.

  • Observe warning signals indicating dangers, especially avalanche risk.

  • Inform third parties about your route and, if possible, never go alone.

Note(s)
Due to altitude and route alignment, good footwear is absolutely essential for this winter hike.

The snowshoe trails are passable without a guide. Caution: they are not tracked, not groomed, and not checked daily. They are also not secured against natural hazards such as avalanches or rockfall. For guaranteed safe snowshoeing enjoyment, heed the weather forecasts and the current avalanche bulletin. Use of the trails is at your own risk!
