Description

A feeling of freedom and lightheartedness captures cross-country skiers on the Goms trails, especially on the Sonnenloipe between the mountain villages Oberwald and Münster. The excellently prepared trail runs picturesque over the snowy plain on the right bank valley side of the Rhone. The trail has practically no gradient and is ideal for beginners in cross-country skiing. The Sonnenloipe can be ideally combined with other trails of the Goms cross-country skiing paradise.

The section from Obergesteln to Geschinen, also known as the Heart trail, was developed in cooperation with the Swiss Heart Foundation and Loipen Schweiz. It aims to motivate heart patients to stay physically active. Moderate endurance training can be particularly well implemented on the Heart trail.

Near the trails, there are numerous catering options. Take the opportunity and enjoy a warming soup, a homemade fruit cake, or something savory on one of the many sunny terraces.

Turn-by-turn directions

The Sonnenloipe starts at Oberwald station and leads towards Obergesteln station. There, you briefly cross the station on foot before gliding further along the open areas at the edge of the village. The route runs along the Tällibach and takes you to Ulrichen, where you cross the main road and immerse yourself in the sunny atmosphere of Goms. It continues towards Geschinen, where you cross the Geschinerbach and see the Baschi restaurant. Soon you reach Geschinen station. Here awaits a short, steep section that brings you towards Münster, where the Sonnenloipe ends.

Equipment

We recommend:

  • Good cross-country skiing equipment
  • Weather-appropriate (water- and windproof) warm clothing and headwear
  • Sunglasses
  • Good sun protection, even in cloudy weather. UV rays at high altitudes can be especially strong in winter.

Safety information

The Goms trail is open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The use of the trails is at your own risk. The Obergoms Tourism AG as well as the Goms trail disclaim any liability and take no responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of the information on this website.

  • Behave considerately towards other trail users. Every cross-country skier must, especially on descents, adjust speed and behavior to their ability and visibility. In classic tracks and on the piste for skating technique, skiing is done on the right side with appropriate safety distance to the skier in front. Those who stop must step out of the trail.
  • Via the winter sports report, you are always well informed about the current conditions (avalanche danger, trails, winter hiking paths, snowshoe trails, and road conditions).
  • Use only marked trails and observe all signs and instructions – for your safety, to protect grazing animals, and without disturbing the peace of wild animals.
  • Behave considerately towards the landscape. Take your waste and the waste of others with you.
  • Weather conditions can change very quickly in the mountains and without warning. Appropriate clothing is very important.
  • Observe warning signals indicating danger, especially avalanche risk.
  • Providing assistance in case of accidents is a matter of course. To alert emergency services, dial 144.
