Description

Start: Gemmibahn cable car summit terminal

From the Gemmibahn cable car summit terminal, take the gondola down to Lake "Daubensee". The trail begins on the southern shore of the lake and initially runs along the eastern shoreline in a northerly direction. After a loop across the frozen lake plateau, you return to the starting point. Alternatively, a shorter loop leads back to the Daubensee railway.

Length: 7 km or 5 km

Special features: The alpine trail offers an impressive backdrop of snow-covered peaks in the Valais and Bernese Alps. It is prepared for both classic cross-country skiing and skating.

Starting from the Gemmi cable car mountain station, take the gondola down to Lake "Daubensee". The trail is in a high Alpine location. Take enough warm clothes (with changes) and warming tea with you to Daubensee.

Information

Public transport

Leuk can be reached by train (SBB), then take the bus (LLB - Leuk Leukerbad Bus Reisen) to the starting point in Leukerbad and the Gemmi railway up to the Gemmi Pass, continuing with the Daubensee railway to the cross-country ski trail. 

Approach

From Basel and Zurich: A1 motorway to Bern, A6 to Spiez, direction Kandersteg, Kandersteg - Goppenstein car transport, direction Gampel, Leuk - Leukerbad.

From Geneva: Motorway A1 to Lausanne, direction Sion/Sierre, Leuk - Leukerbad.

From Milan: Motorway A8/A26 direction Simplon, car transport Iselle-Brig, direction Leuk - Leukerbad.

Parking

Follow the local parking guidance system to the various parking options in Leukerbad which include the following car parks: Sportarena, Rathaus, Torrent, Leukerbad Therme and Alpentherme.

Equipment

Cross-country or skating skis, poles, light backpack, cross-country boots, weather-appropriate and breathable clothing, spare clothes, hat, headband, thin gloves, sun and rain protection, snacks and drinking water, thermos flask with hot drink, first aid kit, mobile phone.

Use marked trails only, and observe all signposting – for your own safety and to avoid disturbing wildlife.
Please be considerate to other trail users, and to the plants and animals. Do not leave any waste in nature, take with you waste from others.
Take extra care protecting yourself from the sun at altitude. UV radiation can be exceptionally strong, even in cloudy weather.
Weather conditions can change quickly in the mountains, without warning. Appropriate clothing is therefore essential.
Take note of the warning signs that point out the constant danger, especially the danger of avalanches.
