Zwischbergen, Gondo - Valleys & Musts

Flora im Simplongebiet

Gondo

Believe it or not: you are still in Switzerland! The hidden valley at the very end of Valais on the border with Italy is definitely worth a detour.

Duration

Description

The route opposite Gondo along the Italian border runs over a terrace that opens further into the dreamlike, 16-kilometer-long and untouched Zwischbergental. The ascent into this remote valley on the southern side of the Simplon Pass is as exhausting as it is surprising: anyone who ventures here feels as if time has stopped! Definitely don't miss this if you are ever in this area!

Turn-by-turn directions

The road from Gondo to the Zwischbergental is dominated by the peaks of Weissmies and Lagginhorn. This section used to be part of a smuggler's path over the Moncerapass and was heavily used during the World Wars. The surroundings are impressive: you will find extensive forests, alpine meadows dotted with mountain flowers, and refreshing mountain lakes. This isolated valley is definitely worth a detour!
