Aussicht auf Veysonnaz

Veysonnaz

On this route from Veysonnaz to Verbier, you will discover Col des Planches: a tricky climb rewarded with a beautiful view.

Difficulty

Difficult

Length

82.76 km

Duration

5:00 h

Description

The first part of the stage leads along the mountainside to the village of Isérables before descending back into the Rhone Valley. On flat terrain, you travel from Riddes via Saxon to Martigny – here, depending on the direction, the wind can become your biggest opponent. You pass vineyards and plantations of typical Valais fruit varieties. After reaching the town of Martigny, you start the climb to Col des Planches. The final climb to Verbier is more regular and less demanding than the previous one – yet fatigue is likely to be noticeable for most athletes. The beautiful landscapes in Val de Bagnes quickly help you forget your tiredness.

Turn-by-turn directions

The beginning of the route from Veysonnaz to Isérables and Riddes is relatively easy to manage. The effort becomes noticeable in the second part of the route: the climbs to Col des Planches and the holiday resort Verbier are much more demanding.

From Riddes to Martigny, you quickly cover many kilometers. In Martigny, the challenging climb to Col des Planches begins, where you will be rewarded with a beautiful view. The descent into Val de Bagnes gives you a short rest before you tackle the final climb to Verbier. A little reminder: Alberto Contador won a legendary stage of the 2009 Tour de France on this very route.

Start

Veysonnaz, Route de Pra 4Z (1335m)

Destination

Verbier, Place Centrale 12 (1490m)

Author's recommendation

In the Rhone Valley, the wind usually changes direction between 11:00 am and 12:00 pm. The chance of having a tailwind on the section between Riddes and Martigny is greater in the morning.

Our recommendation: technically flawless bicycle, helmet, gloves and bell, appropriate clothing depending on the weather (always with you: rain protection), drink and food.
