Description

This stage starts in Leukerbad and takes you along the side of the Valais mountains along the right bank of the Rhone to the town of Brig. The route gradually rises through the Goms up to Oberwald. Some sections of this stage are laid out as gravel roads, which makes the entire route unique and can also provide some adrenaline. From Betten to Martisberg and from Steinhaus to Oberwald, you will find some gravel roads which have very good quality. An extraordinary experience is guaranteed on this route!

Turn-by-turn directions

With renewed energy from the Leukerbad thermal baths, you continue uphill along the banks of the Rhone and discover some unusual places in Upper Valais. The route passes close to the entrance of the Lötschberg railway tunnel, which connects Valais with the canton of Bern. Then you begin the ascent into the Goms, where you will encounter numerous small and typical Valais villages. You approach the great Aletsch Glacier, which is part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage. During the ascent into the Goms, the route takes you through the quiet and tranquil villages of Mörel, Betten, and Martisberg before reaching the stage destination Oberwald.

Public transport

Train connection to Leuk SBB and subsequent bus connection to Leukerbad.

Approach

Take the cantonal road no. 9 from Brig or Sierre to Susten, from where you continue towards Leukerbad at the roundabout. After 18 km, you reach Leukerbad.

Parking

Since this route is a partial section of a stage tour and the start location does not match the destination (not a circular route), we recommend arriving by public transport. Alternatively, the local parking lots in Leukerbad can be used. Please follow the local parking guidance system for this.

Our recommendation: Technically flawless bicycle, helmet, gloves and bell, weather-appropriate clothing (always bring rain protection), drinks and snacks.
