Description

The ascent to Val d’Hérens is an absolute must during a stay in Valais. It lets you discover not only an untouched valley famous for its cattle breed but also numerous typical villages, some of which still have their own lively dialect. Climbing this valley from Bramois and through the village of St-Martin allows you to enjoy the magnificent, varied landscape that changes with every kilometer. Afterwards, it goes steeply uphill to Evolène, a mountain village located on the route of the famous mountain bike race Grand Raid. The last part of the route lies in the middle of Val d’Hérens and leads you to Les Haudères, a picturesque village below Arolla and the Ferpècle dam.

Turn-by-turn directions

The first 11 kilometers between Bramois and St-Martin are covered on a wide, relatively steep road. A four-kilometer flat section gives you a well-deserved break. Enjoy the view of the famous Pyramids of Euseigne, which rise on the other side of the valley. After a quick descent through the fields, you reach the road towards Evolène. Now the landscape opens up again to a broader valley and the gradient eases significantly. You are now in the heart of the Val d’Hérens, one of the most beautiful valleys in the region. For the truly adventurous, Les Haudères is not necessarily the end: to the right, the route continues towards Arolla and to the left towards Ferpècle.
