Description

It is worth discovering the Turtmanntal! With strong calves, you leave the plain and soon reach the villages of Unterems and Oberems. The second part of the ascent is somewhat less steep and runs along the mountainside. It still takes a little patience until the valley unfolds in all its splendor. After 15 kilometers of ascent, you will be rewarded: enjoy the untouched and pristine alpine scenery.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the village of Turtmann, after a few bends, you reach a fork. The road to the right leads into the Turtmanntal, to the left onto the high plateau towards Eischoll and Bürchen. You keep right and shortly afterwards pass through the villages of Unterems and Oberems. Up to this point, you can also reach it effortlessly by cable car. Ahead of you, the valley opens up and awaits you with a somewhat less steep ascent along the mountainside to the end of the paved road. From here, the untouched landscape can be further explored on foot, by mountain bike, or in winter, with touring skis.

Author's recommendation

A cable car runs from Turtmann up to Oberems. This way, you can significantly shorten the ascent.

Visit the Turtmanntal during the alpine cattle ascent in early summer or the descent in autumn. At the Alpe Rotigen, ring cow fights take place with about 120 Eringer cows. This alp is therefore the largest in Upper Valais.
