Description

With an altitude difference of almost 1800 meters, the Sanetsch Pass route is undoubtedly one of the most challenging ascents to be found in Valais. After starting in the Rhone Valley, you first pass through the vineyards of the municipality of Savièse. Then the route leads through the larch and spruce forests of the municipality of Conthey and over alpine pastures before ending in front of the Tsanfleuron Glacier. The pass road offers new surprises at every bend – steep rock walls, waterfalls, snow-covered peaks – and impresses with countless breathtaking landscapes. You gradually pass through narrow and shady gorges, lined with refreshingly fragrant forests. After some welcome short flat sections, the route becomes significantly steeper again and offers a magnificent view of the Rhone Valley, which already appears far away. Over some hairpin bends and past a waterfall, you gradually enter an alpine meadow and pasture landscape. The passage through a tunnel hewn into the rock ends for the daring directly in front of the moraine fields of the Tsanfleuron Glacier.

Turn-by-turn directions

To avoid traffic on the road to Erde (Conthey), the ascent to Sanetsch Pass from Conthey leads through the villages of Vuisse and Chandolin (Savièse). You start in Conthey and cross the bridge that takes you to the left side of the Morgetal. From there, you first follow the signs towards Vuisse and Chandolin, before continuing towards Sanetsch Pass. After a short descent of about one kilometer, you ascend again towards Pont du Diable until you reach the road from Erde to Sanetsch Pass, which you do not leave until the pass summit. The signs of the Valais cycle route marking guide you on this mythical Alpine pass.

Author's recommendation

A very special experience is the return journey with the small cable car from Sanetsch Pass down to Gsteig. From there, you reach the Unterwallis again via Col du Pillon and with a lot of tailwind.
