Forclaz - Mythical Alpine passes

Martigny
3/12°
ClosedThe Col de la Forclaz is neither the most difficult nor the highest pass in Valais, but even the Tour de France professionals had to master it in July 2016 during the stage leading to the Emosson dam. An absolute must!

Starting from Martigny, the pass begins with long straight stretches through the wine-growing area. The asphalt is excellent, and in summer the sun is often quite strong here … So do not take the incline too quickly! Gradually, the route becomes shadier and winds through forest and meadows. The long route does not necessarily seem steep, but the altitude difference is significant and makes this ascent anything but easy. Martigny appears to gradually transform into a miniature town while the panorama of central Valais lies wide and open before you. At the restaurant on the summit, you can enjoy local specialties that will give new energy even to the most exhausted cyclist!
Turn-by-turn directions
The Col de la Forclaz connects Martigny – a former Roman settlement in the Rhone Valley – with the Trient Valley, from where the road continues to Chamonix. The pass, with an altitude of 1,526 meters, offers a steady incline and gradually rises above the wine-growing region crossed in the first few kilometers. Opposite lie the roads to the Great St. Bernard Pass and the Col des Planches, which already remind you of the program for the coming days, even before you reach the summit of the day! In clear weather, you can look over the plain of the central Valais almost as far as Sion and catch a glimpse of the high peaks of the nearby Val de Bagnes. Once you arrive at the pass, you suddenly find yourself in another world. Feel free to venture further into the quiet and protected Trient Valley – with the Mont-Blanc Express, you can easily return to Martigny.
