Description

The starting point for the ascent to the Col de la Gueulaz is the village of Le Châtelard on the border with France. After a few hundred meters on the Forclaz road, the route turns left towards Finhaut. Gradually, you will discover a mountain world on the ascent that is comparable to the great Alpine passes. Take the opportunity to refresh and refuel in the village of Finhaut before tackling the last, most strenuous part of the climb to the Emosson dam. When you reach the destination, you will be at a stage finish of the 2016 Tour de France and can recharge your energy in the restaurant by the dam with a breathtaking panorama!

Turn-by-turn directions

The route between Le Châtelard and the Emosson dam via the Col de la Gueulaz is becoming an absolute must for cycling fans, as it is the final section of the Bern-Emosson stage of the 2016 Tour de France. With every meter of altitude gained, an increasingly untouched, fairytale-like landscape is revealed! The dam remains hidden until the very last moment. Only after crossing the Col de la Gueulaz (1965 m) does it reveal itself in full size! Now you are richly rewarded for your efforts: with a view of Mont Blanc, the Aiguilles du Tour, and the mighty dam! The dam, built from 1969 to 1975, is the second largest in Switzerland and the third highest in the canton of Valais! From the top of the dam, you can still see in spring, with some luck, the remains of the old Barberine dam rising from the rear part of the lake. This dam, built in 1925, became a victim of the floods due to the construction of the new Emosson dam itself.
