The Tour Châteaux de Sion invites cyclists to discover the Sion region. The route leads through the municipalities of Savièse, Grimisuat, Arbaz, Ayent and Saint-Léonard. The landscape is extremely varied: you cycle through forests, terraced vineyards and villages while enjoying the view of the Valais mountains and the castles of Valère and Tourbillon high above the town of Sion. Arbaz at 1140 meters is the highest point of this rather challenging route, which is aimed at sporty cyclists.
Turn-by-turn directions
The route starts in Sion and heads towards Châteauneuf. You ride along the Morge, which has its source in Sanetsch, to reach the vineyard and tackle the first ascent to Savièse. The route then continues through a variety of villages, orchards, forests and vineyards to Grimisuat. Take a short break here and admire the panorama: directly opposite you are the most beautiful peaks of the Valais Alps, including the impressive Dent Blanche. The ascent continues to Arbaz, the highest point of the route. You reach the village of St-Romain, which belongs to the municipality of Ayent. The descent to Saint-Léonard then begins, mostly on a narrow vineyard road. You follow the Lienne as far as the Rhone and then return to Sion, guided by the majestic Valère and Tourbillon castles towering over the Valais capital.
