Description

The Châteaux de Sion route invites cyclists to discover the Sion region. The route passes through the municipalities of Savièse, Grimisuat, Arbaz, Ayent, and Saint-Léonard. The landscape is extremely varied: you cycle through forests, terraced vineyards, and villages, enjoying views of the Valais mountains and the castles of Valère and Tourbillon high above the city of Sion. Arbaz at 1140 meters is the highest point of this quite challenging route, aimed at sporty cyclists.

Turn-by-turn directions

The route starts in Sion and heads towards Châteauneuf. You ride along the Morge, which originates in Sanetsch, to reach the vineyard and tackle the first climb to Savièse. Then, the route continues diversely through villages, orchards, forests, and vineyards towards Grimisuat. Take a short break here and admire the panorama: directly opposite, the most beautiful peaks of the Valais Alps are presented to you, including the impressive Dent Blanche. The ascent then leads further to Arbaz, the highest point of the route. You enter the village of St-Romain, which belongs to the municipality of Ayent. Then begins the descent to Saint-Léonard, mostly on a narrow vineyard road. You follow the Lienne to the Rhone and then return to Sion, guided by the castles of Valère and Tourbillon majestically overlooking the Valais capital.
