Description

Equipped with 1000 meters of steel cable, 400 hooks, 5 ladders, and attractions such as a wire rope bridge or a climbing net, the via ferrata allows mountaineers to climb the Jägihorn at 3,206m. Once on the summit of the three-thousander, enjoy the view of Weissmies, Allalinhorn, and the Mischabel group. Guided ascents are offered from the end of June to mid-October by "Active Dreams Weissmies" or "Saas-Fee Guides".

Turn-by-turn directions

Take the Hohsaas cable car to the middle station Kreuzboden, where the starting point can be reached by a one-hour hike. Then follow the hut path towards Weissmies hut and cross the Triftbach as well as another small mountain creek before reaching the starting point. The via ferrata leads over several ladders onto the ridge of the forepeak. To cross a gap between the forepeak and the main summit, you can choose either a three-rope bridge or bypass it by descending into the gap. After overcoming a climbing net, the route continues to the summit of the Jägihorn. The descent leads down from the summit towards Weissmies hut, passing large boulders and scree. You can either cross the Triftbach again and return to Kreuzboden via Weissmies hut or take the direct path via Sandiger Boden back to Kreuzboden.

A climbing harness with a via ferrata set for self-belaying is mandatory for climbing a via ferrata. Due to the danger of falling rocks, wearing a helmet is also a must.

Pay attention to good footwear, suitable clothing, and enough provisions. Gloves provide additional protection for the fingers and joints and prevent abrasions.

Safety information

Weather: Anyone on via ferratas should pay attention to the weather forecast. A sudden change to bad weather can be life-threatening. Via ferratas must be avoided in case of thunderstorms.

Falling rock danger: There is a risk of rockfalls on via ferratas, mostly triggered by preceding climbers or wild animals. Protect yourself with a helmet.

Protection: When climbing a via ferrata, make sure to keep enough distance to the climber in front. Only one person should be in one anchoring section at a time.
