Schweifinen via ferrata - Route C

Der Klettersteig Schweifinen über den Dächern von Zermatt

Zermatt

The route C of the via ferrata high above the rooftops of Zermatt is often connected after routes A and B. This requires a lot of stamina but makes the great attraction of the via ferrata.

Difficulty

Intermediate

Length

5.53 km

Duration

3:30 h

Description

Route C of the Schweifinen via ferrata leads into a vertical wall, over a shaky swinging wire rope ladder, which is more difficult and interesting than before. Then traverse in an exposed position – with nothing under the feet but iron bars hammered into the rock. Since completing the three routes A, B, and C requires time, endurance, and stamina, plan well beforehand and assess the weather.

Turn-by-turn directions

Ascent: From Zermatt station along Bahnhofstrasse. Shortly after the Zermatters’ office, the hiking trail to Edelweiss and Trift branches off to the right. Follow it upwards, out of the village and towards the Trift Gorge. Before the path crosses the bridge over the Triftbach, the path to the via ferrata entrance branches off to the right (approx. 30 minutes).

Descent: At the exit of route C, follow the hiking trail north, which loops back to Zermatt. (approx. 1h 15)

The map also shows the ascent and descent routes.

Information

Public transport

By train to Matterhorn village: 3½ hours from Zurich Airport or 4 hours from Geneva Airport. Visp is the transfer station to the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. From Visp, the railway line runs through the Nikolai Valley, past small, idyllic villages to Zermatt.

Zermatt is also the start or end point of the world-famous Glacier Express panoramic train journey (St. Moritz / Davos – Zermatt).

Approach

Zermatt is car-free. Access for private vehicles is only allowed up to Täsch (5 km before Zermatt). The road Täsch - Zermatt is closed to public traffic.

Further travel to Zermatt is either by a private taxi service or by shuttle trains. The trains run every 20 minutes. After around 12 minutes, the journey ends at the station square in Zermatt.

Parking

In Täsch there are car parks with covered and uncovered spaces available, such as at the Matterhorn Terminal or with private providers.

Further travel: see arrival instructions.

Equipment

Our recommendation:

  • Good, suitable footwear
  • Clothing appropriate to the weather
  • Climbing harness, helmet and via ferrata set
  • Drink and food

Safety information

  • Carefully plan the route and adapt it to your own conditions, the weather and the season. Do not enter the via ferrata if there is a risk of thunderstorm.
  • Use complete and standard-compliant equipment.
  • Assess your own ability well.
  • The via ferrata can also be done with a mountain guide.
  • Maintain sufficient distance from other users.
  • The abseiling point is only to be used with a mountain guide.

Important! Follow the route right to the end to the official hiking trail.
Observe the weather. A thunderstorm on a via ferrata with metal elements is a deadly danger.
