Grande Dixence

Nestled at the bottom of the Dix valley, the Grande Dixence is the dam that beats all records.
The height of its 285-metre wall remains unequalled. Its weight, around 15 million tonnes, makes it heavier than the Great Pyramid of Cheops. At its base, the dam is 200 metres wide, tapering to 15 metres at its crest.
The Grande Dixence site is open from the beginning of June to the end of October, and guided tours of the inside of the dam are organised every day. The 700m-long AlpinLine zip line runs along the dam wall, skimming over this concrete colossus for guaranteed thrills. From the car park, a cable car takes you to the top of the dam in just five minutes. In summer, Grande Dixence is also the starting point for numerous hikes, including the Sentier des Bouquetins, which goes via the Prafleuri hut. At the foot of the wall, the dam's hotel-restaurant "Le Ritz" offers a warm welcome for a meal or an overnight stay.
