Description

The Stockalperweg is not only one of the most popular hiking routes in the region, but also offers exciting trails for mountain bikers.

Take the Post Bus from Brig to the Simplon Pass.

Get off at Simplon, Hospiz and ride along the Stockalperweg past the Alter Spitel in the direction of Engiloch. Continue along dry stone walls until you reach the hamlet of Egga. After a short passage on the tarred road, the Stockalperweg turns right into the forest. Follow the mule track to Simplon Dorf.

Enjoy the terraces before taking the next Post Bus back up to the Simplon Pass. Now begins the second descent over the gallery roofs of the pass road. By taking the Talweg (valley path) you'll reach the Alte Ganterbrücke (old Ganter bridge) and continue to Schallberg. The trail continues to Ried-Brig, and from Lingwurm, through the suburbs to the centre of Brig.

Our favorites

Our favorite itineraries are part of a selection of the best routes in the region and are proposed by Valais/Wallis Promotion to best meet the expectations of our guests.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the Simplon, Hospiz Post Bus stop, take the Stockalperweg towards Simplon village. Cross the old alpine hamlets of the Simplon Pass and pass the Stockalperturm (Old Spittel). Then cross the Bergalpenstrasse and continue along the Stockalperweg to the stream at Chluismatte. A short climb brings you to the Napoleonic refuge at Engiloch. Continue along the Stockalperweg through alpine meadows and past dry stone walls until you reach Maschihuis. Cross the stone bridge and now follow the tarred road to the hamlet of Egga. Keep to the right so that you don't miss the entrance to the Stockalperweg and follow the path via Sengg. After a bend to the right, Simplon Dorf appears in front of you.

Take the Post Bus back up the Simplon Pass to the Hospiz stop.

Directly behind the hospice, the trail leads up to the right, you'll reach the Simplon Kulm rest area. Take the trail up to the roof of the pass gallery. A metal ramp follows, which leads you onto the old Route de Napoleon. A short but steep ascent takes you back to the gallery roof. Follow the trail to Schalbett. The trail then leads over a metal ramp into a wooded area. After riding up the road, you'll reach the Ganterwald restaurant. Now follow the Talweg Ganter until you reach the old Ganter bridge, and then turn right and ride under the bridge. The trail climbs gently on the right. Continue until you reach the road below and head left on the trail into the forest. The descent takes you to Chräjubiel. Now take the Stockalperweg via Bleiken zum Brei to Lingwurm. Using the new Simplon road, you'll pass through the suburbs and Stockalper Castle to Brig.
