Description

On the old valley path between Saas-Balen and Stalden, the route passes through the various hamlets of Eisten and Stalden, such as "Ze Briggeltinu", "Zen Eisten" or "Raftgartu". Most of these authentic villages are not visible from the road, allowing mountain bikers to get to know the rocky valley entrance from a different side. During the trail, the view wanders over the Bietschorn as well as towards the Saas valley and its mountains. In addition to numerous waterfalls, the path also passes historic points, such as the "Hüetegga", the birthplace of mountaineering king Alexander Burgener, or the almost 500-year-old "Chinegga" bridge, over which all the mule and tourist traffic of that time passed.

In Stalden, mountain bikers can discover further bike adventures in the region on routes No. 41 (Valais Alpine Bike) and No. 150 (Visp - Zermatt Bike).

Note: After Saas-Balen, in the section Niedergut to ARA, the path is impassable due to storm damage. A detour via the main road is signposted.

Our favorites

Our favorite itineraries are part of a selection of the best routes in the region and are proposed by Valais/Wallis Promotion to best meet the expectations of our guests.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the village square in Saas-Balen, the trail runs along the creek over Niedergut to the water intake and across a small bridge. Then you reach the eastern side of the valley. After the shooting range, the route zigzags down to the cantonal road and crosses it. At the ARA junction, it descends and continues left of the entrance below the tunnel to the valley station of the cable car, before following the old paths to the hamlet of "Ze Briggeltinu". After that, the trail leads over pastures and forests to the Ahornbach and then down an asphalt mountain road to Zen Eisten. Shortly before reaching the cantonal road, it turns right and follows the path to Eisten. At the hairpin bend near Eisten, it goes straight ahead through the last hamlets to the "Chinegga" bridge and then along the small village street to the Stalden-Saas train station.
