The starting point for this tour is in the attractive heart of the village of Leukerbad. Right away, the route passes one of the thermal baths for which the resort is famous: the hot springs here have been known since Roman times. Next, a scenic climb along minor roads and alpine lanes leads to Torrentalp high above Leukerbad and Albinen. The magnificent views extend from the dramatic cliffs in the west to many of the 4,000-metre peaks of the southern Alps. The restaurant by the middle station of the gondola offers a chance to rest and enjoy refreshments. The ride continues along a beautiful high trail to “Undru Guggerhubel”, another superb vantage point that provides the route’s name. The singletrack trail that comes next is the highlight of the ride and leads through the Hewald forest – destroyed in a fire in 2003 – and on to Guttet-Feschel. Finally, the route passes through the delightful small town of Leuk, full of history, and down to Leuk railway station (in Susten).
Our favorites
Our favorite itineraries are part of a selection of the best routes in the region and are proposed by Valais/Wallis Promotion to best meet the expectations of our guests.
Turn-by-turn directions
Starting in Leukerbad, the route first follows a flattish trail through the meadows to just below the so-called Albinen ladders. From here, you take a paved road with a pleasant upward gradient to the base station of the Flaschen gondola. A steady ascent along an alpine road takes you to Torrentalp with glorious views. Next comes the fun and well-deserved descent: a surprisingly easy-to-ride singletrack trail with a perfect gradient leads via the Tschärmilonga alpine pastures and through the Hewald forest, burnt in a fire in 2003, and down to Guttet. The route then follows the road for a short while to Wiler. By the big transmitter antenna, you turn off onto a historical trail towards Oberrotafen. A final short climb by road takes you via Grächmatten to below Thel. From here, you follow the Torrenttrail and other singletrack trails to Leuk. Finally, ride through the historical small town, past the castle and down to the river Rhône. The route finishes at Leuk/Susten station.
