Description

From Leukerbad the trail leads slightly uphill over meadows and pastures and later downhill through mixed conifer and deciduous forests to Inden. The path partly follows the old track of the former Leuk-Leukerbad railway. The route comprises clear paths without technically difficult obstacles. The view upwards almost presents itself by itself: The high and impressive rock arena impresses again and again from new perspectives. After Inden, the way leads past a restored lime kiln from the late Middle Ages. A little further downhill you have to overcome the steep rock face Schattuflüe on the impressive Varnerleitern path. Even Johann Wolfgang von Goethe reached Leukerbad in 1779 from Sierre via this historic section of the path. After this passage, the field of view gradually widens and the Rhone valley shows itself in its full splendor to the west. The path leads back above the wine village Varen to Leuk town and from there down to the Susten train station.

Our favorites

Our favorite itineraries are part of a selection of the best routes in the region and are proposed by Valais/Wallis Promotion to best meet the expectations of our guests.

Turn-by-turn directions

The route starts at the Leukerbad bus station and first crosses the Dala stream to the sports arena in Leukerbad. On the right side of the Dala, the path leads to Inden. Mostly on wide and clear singletrails, partly on field paths. A considerate riding style is required here – there are also hikers on the way. About one kilometer after the charming mountain village, the path branches off to the right towards Varen. Upon reaching the impressive rock face Schattuflüe, it must be conquered. The steep but short ascent (about 250 meters) to the top rock edge is best managed on foot despite the wide path. Afterwards, it goes through the Varnerwald and further via Stadilacher and Priische down to the wine village of Varen. From Varen, the route continues together with Veloland Route No. 72 through the small village of Leuk and past the castle. At the end, you can gently roll down to the Rhone and then on to the Susten train station.
