Bike route Zermatt–Sunnegga Uphill (No. 22)

Uphill mit perfekter Matterhorn Sicht

Zermatt

This route is the sporty alternative to the ride with the Sunnegga funicular. At Sunnegga you have the perfect starting point for the Sunnegga Flowtrail as well as for several other bike routes.

Difficulty

Intermediate

Length

8.47 km

Duration

1:30 h

Description

Starting in the village, the route leads along the paved road to the Restaurant Ried, until the path gradually changes to a gravel road and runs through fragrant larch forests. Shortly before Sunnegga, you cross the tree line and the mountain panorama including the Matterhorn opens up.

At Sunnegga there are many connection possibilities in practically all directions: the fun descent on the Sunnegga Flowtrail, gourmet enjoyment in Findeln, or extend the route to Riffelalp

This route does not strictly require a mountain bike, but slightly wider tires are advantageous.

Information

Public transport

By train to the Matterhorn village: 3½ hours from Zurich airport or 4 hours from Geneva airport. Visp is each time the transfer station on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. From Visp the railway line runs through the Nikolai valley, past small, idyllic villages to Zermatt.

Zermatt is also the starting or end point of the world-famous Glacier Express panorama train service (St. Moritz / Davos – Zermatt).

Approach

Zermatt is car-free. Access for private traffic is only allowed up to Täsch (5 km before Zermatt). The road Täsch - Zermatt is closed to public traffic.

Further travel to Zermatt is either by private taxi service or shuttle trains. The trains run every 20 minutes. After about 12 minutes, the journey ends at the railway station square in Zermatt.

Parking

In Täsch there are parking garages with covered and uncovered spaces available, for example in the Matterhorn Terminal or with private providers.

Further travel: see arrival.
