Description

From Furi, the road gently ascends through the forest - past the reservoir of the Zmuttbach to Stafelalp. By then, the power of the Matterhorn's north face becomes clear.

From Stafelalp, the gravel road leads ever closer to the Matterhorn - an impressive scenery. The gradient varies, with some steep sections that are a physical challenge without electric assistance.

Information

Public transport

By train to the Matterhorn village: 3½ hours from Zurich Airport or 4 hours from Geneva Airport. Visp is the transfer point to the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway. From Visp, the railway line runs through the Nikolai Valley, past small, idyllic villages to Zermatt.

Zermatt is also the start or end point of the world-famous Glacier Express panorama train ride (St. Moritz / Davos – Zermatt).

Approach

Zermatt is car-free. Access for private traffic is allowed only up to Täsch (5 km before Zermatt). The Täsch - Zermatt road is closed to public traffic.

Further travel to Zermatt is either by private taxi service or shuttle trains. The trains run every 20 minutes. The trip ends after about 12 minutes at the station square in Zermatt.

Parking

In Täsch, car parks with covered and uncovered spaces are available, for example, at the Matterhorn Terminal or from private providers.

Further travel: see directions.

Equipment

Our recommendation:

  • Technically flawless bike
  • Helmet, protective gear, gloves, and trail bell
  • Repair kit, spare tube, and mini tool
  • Weather-appropriate clothing (always carry: rain protection)
  • Drink and provisions
  • First-aid kit

Safety information

  • Wearing gloves and helmet is recommended because wise heads protect themselves.
  • Use only marked bike trails and roads and follow the signage. Please close gates and pasture fences behind you.
  • Be considerate towards hikers as well as plants and animals. Hikers always have right of way.
  • Assess your own skills and fitness well, as some routes reach 3,000 meters.
  • Riding the different routes is fundamentally at your own risk.
