Description

This excursion starts at the Riederalp Mitte mountain railway station by taking the Aletsch Promenade to Bettmeralp. The going is relatively flat here, but this changes quickly and the section from Bettmeralp to the Wurzenbord is hard-work. Alternatively, there is the option of taking the Wurzenbord chairlift to the top. The route continues along the relatively flat Herrenweg to the Fiescheralp, then up to the Tälligrattunnel (Obers Tälli). Be sure to enjoy the view of the Fiescher Glacier here. After passing through the tunnel, the route leads to the Märjela. Tip: Go down to the edge of the glacier, marvel at the Great Aletsch Glacier and take a break in the Glacier Room to build up strength for the return journey. From Märjela, either take the same route back to Fiescheralp or experienced bikers can opt for the challenging trail via Unners Tälli. From the Bergfreund restaurant on the Fiescheralp, turn right towards Schönbiel. At the Bättmerhitta restaurant, follow Herrenweg for a short section before turning right again and taking a trail to the idyllic Bettmersee lake. The last stage leads back to the Riederalp Mitte mountain station via Gopplerlücke and Golmenegg.

Our favorites

Our favorite itineraries are part of a selection of the best routes in the region and are proposed by Valais/Wallis Promotion to best meet the expectations of our guests.

Turn-by-turn directions

From Bettmeralp, follow the signs for Bettmersee. This section includes some steep ascents. Then it's uphill towards the Wallisertube restaurant, where you follow the path towards Fiescheralp.

The surface changes from asphalt to a natural path. A slight ascent of around 150 metres in altitude leads to the Bättmerhitta restaurant. After that, the route leads for about two kilometres along the Herrenweg to the Fiescheralp mountain station.

From here, a slightly wider path leads towards the Gletscherstube. Shortly before that, you’ll pass through a tunnel for about two km. This is dark and in some places water drips from the walls. After the Gletscherstube, a narrow, sometimes rocky hiking trail leads back towards Fiescheralp. This is only suitable for very experienced cyclists. Otherwise, we suggest returning via the tunnel and tackling the steep sections on foot.

From Fiescheralp, the route goes back towards Bettmeralp. Follow the path along the mountain to Bettmersee. From here, the route continues via the Schneebodu reservoir and along a narrow hiking trail back to Riederalp.
