Description

This first stage of 29 kilometers with a little more than 1100 meters of altitude connects Verbier with the Cabane d’Essertze. Start your path along the calm water of the Levron suone for several kilometers before tackling beautiful climbs. The route takes you to Col Termin and further up to Col de Louvie, from where you have an impressive panorama over the Val de Bagnes and the Combins massif. The path then leads down towards Lac du Grand Désert, allowing you to move through a landscape characterized by rocks, where many ibex live. You return to the plain and reach Mont-Rouge via the Chervé suone with views of the Cleuson dam lake. After one last descent, you reach the Cabane d’Essertze, operated by volunteers from the Hérémencia ski club. The great variety of landscapes in the first stage offers a perfect insight into the diversity and quality of the entire route.

Turn-by-turn directions

The route starts at the top at the Ruinettes cable car, which departs from Verbier. First, follow the Levron suone to Col Termin. The path then ascends to Col de Louvie and continues through a moon landscape mainly consisting of rocks down to Lac du Grand Désert. Follow the old Chervé suone where you have a view of the Cleuson dam. You reach Mont-Rouge via the Combatseline mountain hut before you begin the last descent to Cabane d’Essertze.

  • Weather conditions in the mountains can change very quickly and without warning. Appropriate clothing and provisions (food and drink) are very important. In unstable weather, it is better to turn back early.
  • Inform your family about your trail route. Avoid being alone if possible.
