Getting there
Information

Public transport

By train to Matterhorn Village: 3½ hrs from Zurich Airport or 4 hrs from Geneva Airport. Visp is the transfer point to the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway. From Visp the railway runs through the Nikolai Valley, past small, idyllic villages to Zermatt.

Zermatt is also the starting or end point of the world-famous Glacier Express panoramic train journey (St. Moritz / Davos – Zermatt).

Approach

Zermatt is car-free. Access for private traffic is only allowed up to Täsch (5 km before Zermatt). The road Täsch - Zermatt is closed to public traffic.

Further travel to Zermatt is either by private taxi provider or shuttle trains. The trains run every 20 minutes. After about 12 minutes the journey ends at the railway station square in Zermatt.

Parking

In Täsch there are parking garages with covered and uncovered spaces available, e.g., at the Matterhorn Terminal or from private providers.

Further travel: see arrival information.

Equipment

Our recommendation:

  • Good footwear
  • Possibly hiking poles
  • Clothing suitable for the weather (always carry: rain protection)

Safety information

  • Plan every mountain tour carefully and adapt it to your own condition as well as the weather and season.
  • The weather can change quickly in the mountains. Therefore, take suitable clothing and enough provisions and water. Turn back in time in case of uncertain weather.
  • Inform others about your tour and, if possible, never go alone.
  • Do not leave marked paths and do not go onto glaciers without a mountain guide.
  • Show consideration for other hikers as well as plants and animals.
  • Observe the warning signs that point out the constant danger in the riverbed and on the banks of the watercourses below dams and water intakes.
