Description

The Ahornweg runs along meadows and the forest edge, accompanied by apricot plantations, offering an incomparable view of the Rhone Valley. The twelve information panels along the path from Isérables provide insights into the history and nature of these places, making the hike even more exciting. Gradually, you will become a true expert on storages, dry stone walls, and grain terraces. The Ahornweg follows the hillside and is a really pleasant path, mainly thanks to the maple trees with their bright colors that contribute to the charm of this hike.

Turn-by-turn directions

From Riddes, take the hiking trail from Pied du Mont with numerous switchbacks up to the village of Isérables. Upon reaching the village center, follow the information panels of the Ahornweg («Voie des Erables»), which consists of two combinable circular routes. Just before the museum, first go down to magnificent storages. The path continues over a small paved road that gradually turns into a path lined with apricot trees, offering a wonderful view of the Rhone Valley and the Muveran peaks. Then it goes back up through the maple forest to the playground and from there to the highest point of the village before you hike back to the center. Continue your hike along the ice rink and the subsequent ascent under the shade of the trees, then follow the gravel path along the stream. Afterwards, turn left onto a small, partly shaded path that leads you over a community road towards the village center.

Safety information

Use of the hiking trails and information on this website is at your own risk. Conditions on site may cause changes to the route. Valais/Wallis Promotion assumes no responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of the information on this website. Assess your own abilities and fitness well. Traveling on the various routes is fundamentally at your own responsibility.

For all hikes:

  • Carry a map with you. Download the complete description of the hiking trail with a large-scale map by clicking "Print" at the top right of the page.
  • Use only marked hiking trails and observe all signs and instructions—for your own safety, to protect grazing animals, and out of respect for wildlife.
  • Close gates again after passing through.
  • Behave considerately towards other path users, plants, and animals.

For mountain hikes:

  • Carry additional sun protection. UV rays at high altitudes can be very strong, even in cloudy weather.
  • Plan your hike carefully: consider the required fitness level of all participants, weather forecasts, and seasonal dependencies.
  • Weather conditions can change very quickly and without warning in the mountains. Adequate clothing and sufficient provisions (food and drink) are very important. In unstable weather, it is better to turn back early.

For high alpine hikes:

  • Inform your family about your hiking route. If possible, avoid traveling alone.
  • Do not go on glaciers without a mountain guide.
  • Observe warning signs indicating hazards at riverbanks, along watercourses below dams and reservoirs: water levels can rise quickly and without warning.
