Description

Saas-Fee has a long history of mountain adventures, from the first recorded ski descent in Switzerland in 1849 to pioneering first ascents and the early development of mountain hotels in the Alps. The route leads us to one of the most popular mountain huts in the Alps, the Britannia Hut, built in 1912.

The path begins at the Felskinn mountain station, where the Felskinnbahn and the Alpin Express gondolas arrive at 2988 m. Here is also the valley station of the Metro Alpin, which holds several world records. It is the highest funicular and at the same time the highest underground railway in the world. The Metro Alpin leads up to the highest rotating restaurant and the highest glacier grotto in the world.

Our hike, on the other hand, leads from the Felskinn station on a mountain path over the lower part of the Chessjen Glacier and then to the Egginerjoch at 2988 m above sea level, with breathtaking views. The glittering Fee Glacier adorns the flanks of the Mischabel massif, the third highest mountain massif in the Alps after the Mont Blanc massif and the Monte Rosa massif. Its summit, the Dom, is the highest mountain peak located entirely in Switzerland at 4545 m above sea level.

The path then leads down into a basin before, after crossing the glacier again, leading to the Britannia Hut at 3030 m above sea level. It is one of the most visited mountain huts in the Swiss Alps. Originally built by the "Association of British Members of the Swiss Alpine Club" as a token of thanks for the hospitality in the Swiss mountains, the iconic hut was renovated in 1997 and equipped with solar lighting.

A short stretch leads back on the same path before the trail continues north after crossing the glacier. Along the flank of the valley, the path leads to the mountain station of the Plattjen gondola. The views of the Saastal, the Mattmark reservoir, and the surrounding peaks are breathtaking.

Highlights of the hike:

  • Dramatic route for experienced mountaineers along high paths.
  • Scenic ride with the mountain railway to the starting point and back to Saas-Fee.
  • Historic Britannia Hut with restaurant and great views of the surrounding glaciers.

Turn-by-turn directions

The hike leads from Felskinn over a spur of the Chessjen Glacier to the Egginerjoch. Then the path goes northeast into a former glacier basin with lakes. At the junction, continue to the right; the path zigzags through the rocky landscape and then over the glacier up to the Britannia Hut. Afterwards, follow the same path back to the junction and continue north from there. The descent along the flank of the Saastal is steep. After the Heidefridhof point, the path leads through the scree landscape through the Meiggental below the Mittaghorn to the shoulder of the mountain massif above the Plattjen gondola station. From Plattjen, you can return to Saas-Fee either by gondola or on foot.

Safety information

Use of the hiking trails and information on this website is at your own risk. Local conditions may cause changes to the route. Valais/Wallis Promotion assumes no responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of the information on this website. Assess your own abilities and fitness carefully. Usage of the various routes is fundamentally at your own responsibility.

For all hikes:

  • Carry a map with you. Download the complete description of the hiking trail with a large-scale map by clicking "Print" at the top right of the page.
  • Use only marked hiking trails and obey all signposts and instructions—for your own safety, to protect grazing animals, and out of respect for wildlife.
  • Close gates after passing through them.
  • Behave considerately towards other trail users, plants, and animals.

For mountain hikes:

  • Carry additional sunscreen. UV rays at altitude can be very strong, even in overcast weather.
  • Plan your hike carefully: consider the required fitness level of all participants, weather forecasts, and seasonal dependencies.
  • The weather conditions in the mountains can change very quickly and without warning. Appropriate clothing and sufficient provisions (food and drink) are very important. In unsettled weather, it is better to turn back early.

For high alpine hikes:

  • Inform your family about your hiking route. If possible, avoid traveling alone.
  • Do not go on glaciers without a mountain guide.
  • Observe warning signals indicating dangers at riverbanks, along waterways below dams and reservoirs: water levels can rise quickly and without warning.
