Description

The Val d'Entremont is primarily known for the Great Saint Bernard Pass but also hosts a number of historic villages and hamlets that are very well preserved and full of charm. This hike leads through the most beautiful and noteworthy localities: Liddes, Chandonne, Commeire, La Rosière, Chamoille d'Orsières, and La Douay.

The Via Francigena, one of the oldest and most famous hiking routes through the valley, is part of the historic pilgrim path from Canterbury to Rome. Our hike, however, takes a slightly higher route through sunny alpine pastures, forests, and sleepy mountain villages off the beaten path.

The hike starts in Liddes, a small village with a 13th-century church and a small but attractive museum. The next stage is Chandonne, a hamlet on a sunny terrace at 1,454 m above sea level—a place of heavenly peace and tranquility.

The localities shine with a rich architectural heritage in the form of traditional houses, chalets, and barns. Commeire is a prime example: a small hamlet transformed into an innovative and sustainable tourism project called "Montagne Alternative." It welcomes tourists and seminar groups and serves as a venue for various events focusing on a sustainable lifestyle.

The hamlet holds another surprise: an underground fortress built between 1940 and 1943 to accommodate more than 140 soldiers who sought to defend the strategic position of this valley. The complex has been decommissioned for years but can now be visited by the public. Parts of it can even be rented for events.

The next village, La Rosière, attracts pilgrims from all over the world, not least because it is the childhood home of Maurice Tornay. The Roman Catholic priest worked on missions in China and Tibet and was beatified in 1993 by Pope John Paul II. His birth house can be visited by the public.

Hiking highlights:

  • Beautiful and well-preserved village with traditional architecture and historic charm.
  • Extensive and beautiful panoramas over the Val d'Entremont and on the Mont Blanc massif.

Turn-by-turn directions

At the starting point in Liddes, follow the path over fields northward to the village of Chandonne. The route continues uphill over alpine pastures and then through the forest to Commeire. Then it goes north along the edge of the forest before descending to the hamlet of La Rosière. The descent continues in a zigzag pattern to Chamoille d'Orsières, where the road is crossed before a final descent back to the valley floor. Here you cross the bridge over the Drance d'Entremont and reach the endpoint at La Douay railway station. To return to the starting point, take the St-Bernard Express to Orsières and change to the post bus to Liddes.

Safety information

Use of the hiking trails and information on this website is at your own risk. Local conditions may cause changes to the route. Valais/Wallis Promotion assumes no responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of the information on this website. Assess your own abilities and fitness well. Using the various routes is fundamentally at your own responsibility.

For all hikes:

  • Carry a map with you. Download the complete description of the hiking trail with a large-scale map by clicking "Print" at the top right of the page.
  • Use only marked hiking trails and observe all signposts and instructions - for your own safety, to protect grazing animals, and out of respect for wildlife.
  • Close gates after passing through.
  • Behave considerately towards other trail users, plants, and animals.

For mountain hikes:

  • Carry additional sun protection. UV rays at high altitudes can be very strong, even in overcast weather.
  • Plan your hike carefully: consider the required fitness level of all participants, weather forecasts, and seasonal conditions.
  • Weather conditions can change very quickly and without warning in the mountains. Appropriate clothing and sufficient provisions (food and drink) are very important. In unstable weather, it is better to turn back early.

For high alpine hikes:

  • Inform your family about your hiking route. If possible, avoid hiking alone.
  • Do not go onto glaciers without a mountain guide.
  • Observe warning signs indicating dangers at riverbanks, along watercourses below dams and reservoirs: water levels can rise quickly and without warning.
