The summit of the Brudelhorn (2791 m above sea level) offers one of the most beautiful views of the Obergoms, the valley of the young Rhône. Further down, the picturesque villages along the Rhône are arranged like pearls on a necklace.
This exhilarating summit hike shows the two faces of the mountain, starting with the east flank. The ascent is eased by the location of the starting point on the Nufenen Pass road (Ladstafel bus stop) at around 2000 m above sea level. Nearby is an old stone bridge, a relic of an even older mule track that was used for centuries as one of the main trade routes over the Alps via the Gries Pass.
Our path, however, leads westward, climbing the wild Lengtal, passing by the sparkling waters of Lake Distel at 2587 m above sea level. A short final ascent of about 200 vertical meters leads up to the summit of the Brudelhorn and offers breathtaking views.
For about 400 meters, the route returns along the same path before the actual descent along the northern slope of the Brudelhorn begins. The path proceeds evenly through a landscape of large rock boulders before you reach the lush meadows along the Merezebach stream. Further down, the trail leads through forests and pastures to Münster, the main village of Goms with sun-weathered chalets and dazzling white churches and chapels.
Like the other Goms villages, Münster flourished during the 17th and 18th centuries due to transalpine trade. The trade route was replaced by the construction of tunnels through the Simplon and Gotthard in the 19th century – however, the historic charm of the Goms villages has remained intact.
Highlights of the hike:
- Great summit hike with panoramic views
- Crossing two contrasting valleys: the wild Lengtal to the east and the passage into the historic Rhône Valley in the Obergoms.
Turn-by-turn directions
The starting point of the hike is the Ladstafel bus stop on the pass road from Ulrichen to the Nufenen Pass. The route crosses the old stone bridge before the ascent through the Lengtal.
The path up to the Brudelhorn and then down to Münster is well marked.
On the way down to the Rhône Valley, the hike can alternatively be extended by descending to Geschinen or Reckingen instead of Münster.
Many of the historic Goms villages also have their own cultural trail. Additionally, an audio hike on the topics of climate and renewable energy is available along the Rhône. This route can be done on foot or by (electric) bike. Audio equipment is available at the tourist office in Münster, and bikes can be rented locally.

Author's recommendation
At the end point of the hike in Münster, try a “Gommer Cholera,” the local specialty made with leeks, onions, potatoes, apples, and cheese. The restaurants Croix d’Or et Poste and Landhaus in Münster serve this specialty.
