Fort of Sapinhaut

The Swiss army constructed this artillery fort in 1991, at the foot of the Pierre Avoi rocky outcrop, in the hamlet of Sapinhaut, above the town of Saxon. The fort was part of the final phase of military fortress construction in Switzerland. The twin 12cm armoured mortars at Sapinhaut could cover the two axes of Orsières, Sembrancher and Bovernier, or Martigny-Bourg and Chamoson, and provide effective fire support to infantry in these areas.

The fort can be visited through prior reservation. An aperitif can be arranged from the Col Roesti as part of a group visit, in the living quarters of the fort.
